Swelling of hands and feet

Does anyone have issues with swelling of hands and feet ? I'm on a bp pill but sometimes my left foot and leg swell bad. I watch my salt and maintain a heathy diet . I've lost 11 lbs , but it seems like I've plateaued .

Any input is appreciated. ❤️

I've told my Dr and he says to watch my salt intake , which I do my best to.

Input , advice recommendations are welcome !

Thanks !

When you hit a plateau it is difficult. That's when you have to persevere and let your body make the adjustments and begin the weight-loss again. It isn't easy but if you stick to it you'll be pleased with the results.

This struggle with my weight has been such a challenge. It's hard when I hear others say , " you need to be doing this " . It's aggravating because not everyone knows my health situation and I don't talk about it alot. I have given up all kinds of things ( salt , alcohol , most dairy etc. ) I've made huge changes in my diet , but I still struggle.

Thank you for responding .

Hi BBland.

Did you tell your doctor that it is only one side of you that is swelling? Makes a difference if you have over all swelling or in one location.

Is this new or has it been happening for a long while? Did you change any medications? Is the swelling warm? Does it go down at night when you elevate it? Is the foot warm when there is swelling or does it feel cold?

Do you have diabetes? Does it occur after exercise or is it something that comes on all the time? All these questions are something your doctor should have asked.

If the swelling continues, call your doctor back. There maybe something more involved such as a blood clot or venous insufficiency.

As far as plateauing...welcome to the club. I am on my second go round of plateauing. First time was after I lost 25 pounds and now I am struggling to get down the last 3 pounds to make forty. Hang in there. Sometimes you have to just wait it out and then change up something. Add different foods and different exercise.

Sometimes I swell all over , but mostly it's my left foot and lower leg. I have told my nephrologist and we've adjusted my meds recently . I do battle HBP.

I also fell back in 2016 and tore ligaments in both ankles . I have an appointment to see the foot Dr on May 28 and hopefully he will do more xrays or whatever is needed . I do have a feeling the swelling is related to that Injury .

This is not an everyday thing. It's just every once in a while my left foot and leg swells so big it hurts . Was just curious to hear I put from you all here . I appreciate you all so much !

If possible, also up your exercise. That will help to begin again.

I've done muscle confusion exercise before and it worked wonders. However , I'm having issues with my feet and left leg that's making it difficult to maintain a good exercise regimen. I'm not giving up though ❤️

Have you heard of or tried Tommy Kirchhoff, Tai Chi Master's Healing Exercise, Sitting Tai Chi? I also have osteoarthritis and realized that I was getting weaker and weaker and needed to do something about it. I started with various you tube videos for Chair Yoga. I found that while I liked them, they left me hurting even more, so I backed up and did some more searching and looked into Tai Chi.

--Tommy starts off with Sitting Tai Chi and you can do as much or as little as you want each day. I purchased the Digital Download of that video and also the DVD of the next one Standing Energy Tai Chi. These have helped me to get started.

--I then began using David-Dorian Ross' Tai Chi Fit Over 50, and am following up with his Tai Chi Fit to Go. I find these have grounded me, so much so that when I had a couple of dizzy spells a couple of weeks ago, I actually felt my feet grounded and keeping me from falling.

--Finally, I have followed up with Sherry Zak Morris' Energizing Chair Yoga. I find these three people best fit with my style of learning and doing.

If you google these three people, you will find a lot of you tube videos, as well as those of others also. I have found that if I do this slowly, but steadily, they help me feel better.

Good luck!

Hi, I also have swelling in my feet and legs. My fingers on my hands seem to have fluid also. I guess that doesn't help you at all. I just wanted you to know that you're not alone!

Thank you !

It's very depressing to say the least . I've never been this heavy in my life and having swollen feet and legs makes it so much harder to exercise to lose weight . God bless you!

I agree with Bassetmommer, one side swelling does not sound like a salt issue. I would contact your doctor to verify that there is not a blood clot or venous insufficiency. I hope that helps.

I'm not answering this as a doctor, but as a patient that had this issue a few years ago. This sounds like peripheral edema. Edema is the result of a buildup of excess fluid in your tissues. Normally, the body maintains a balance of fluids between the blood vessels, in each limb and throughout the lymph system and all of the tissues outside of these vessels. If the balance is not maintained, the tiniest blood vessels may leak fluid that builds up in surrounding tissues. Tht is edema.

This can lead to a mild amount of swelling in the other leg that may be eliminated by fixing the problem in the other leg. I had this problem several years ago and needed a Vascular Surgeon to look at it. He performed a Vein Ablation and then I needed to have Sclerotherapy and since then I'm no longer having the swelling issue. If you notice that your swollen leg is discolored in spots, this can be a sign that you have to see a vein specialist immediately. To help you move around better before, during treatment and after you might ask about wearing compression stockings to ease the discomfort and reduce the pain.

Thank you so much . I've been suspicious that maybe this is a vein issue , just haven't been back to ask anyone . I'll be calling to set that up asap. Many thanks!

Some BP meds like clonidine cause swelling. Read the monograph that comes with your meds. If it is your BP pills ask your doctor if you should change the prescription. My feet are very swollen.
