Indian Renal Diet for CKD / IGA
After doing my own research and seeing the responses of lot of people, a Vegan diet without Wheat, Dairy, Meat, Processes-ed foods is favorable as per Indian context. The goal should be to eat foods that put minimal load & don't increase inflammation in the body.
If you happen to speak to an Ayurvedic & Naturopathy doctors, they advise to drink less fluids/Juices as that also puts more pressure on already damaged kidneys. One should drink water in small sips only.
Please do your own research and ask around as well. All the best!
Thank you Swatkat, when I read thru some forum mentioned wheat are ok to have and vegan flour even has more potassium and minerals. Weekly one day fasting will help?
Hi Igackd3,
It is important to know that one diet does not fit everyone the same. You do not say what stage CKD you have. If you are at 3 or even 4, diet can help in many cases to slow down the progression of CKD. Eating less or no meat is important because of the stress on the kidney to process the protein. It is completely different if you are on dialysis. Eating plant based is highly recommended for most stages of CKD, but depending on your levels of potassium and phosphorous, there can be limitations on that as well.
One thing that swatkat said is a contradiction to what is done here in the States. Most doctors recommend that you drink up to 2 liters of water everyday if you are in stage 2,3, or 4 or in some cases even 5. That changes again if you are on dialysis. The kidneys need the push of the water to help eliminate toxic wastes that the kidneys are having troubles flushing out. kidney.org/content/6-tips-b...
Yes, even my neurologist recommended 2 liters of water everyday
The best thing to do is to get a consult from your nephrologist to see a renal dietician. Everyone is different, so what works for one person might not be ok for you. That is why it is so important to talk with a dietician and get a meal plan for you. It is very important to drink plenty of water throughout the day to flush out toxins from your kidneys. Make sure your blood pressure is under good control too. I was always told DO NOT fast! This can really put stress your kidneys.
So, that said......see a renal dietician!
Good luck.
