A long way to go (day 2) and I’m hungry

5 stone seems a big hill to climb and I’m right at the start of it looking up at the summit! Dear me it’s a long way! Day two under my belt but this morning I am HUNGRY

If you're hungry, you're either not eating enough, or you're not eating the correct foods that will keep you satiated.

Check your personal calorie allowance with the NHS BMI calculator and aim to start near the top of the range, as 1400 cals is a generic number and suits very few of us. nhs.uk/live-well/healthy-we...

Then make sure that you're eating plenty of good fats, ie olive oil, coconut oil, butter, full fat dairy, oily fish, avocados and nuts. Do not opt for the fat free/low fat/light versions of anything, or highly processed seed oils.

Don't concentrate on your whole journey, as that will feel overwhelming. Break it up into small manageable chunks and take each day as it comes.

If you're hungry, that's your body giving you a hint that you need to eat :)

Just make sure you're eating things that tilt your metabolism towards fat-burning rather than fat storage. You can't go wrong with a nice scrambled egg or omelette to start the day. Keep the toast to a minimum and have some veggies on the side instead.

Absolutely top tip!! My Saturday morning usually consists of 2 scrambled eggs, mushrooms, tomatoes and usually a couple of slices of lean bacon. Pile your plate with mushrooms and tomatoes, don't use too much oil and you can have a big breakfast to start the day that is filling and doesn't blow the calories (if you are counting)

One step at a time don't look at the big picture !

At the start of any change in diet habbits your body will just be over thinking and food will be top of that list and then that can make you feel hungrier ahhh 😫

I've found making a plan helps then it's not always in your head apart from obviously shopping and preparing.

Are you able to do any exercise more steps even it's very in vogue to get a step counter fitness watch but not all can afford but actually just moving around a bit more is good !

Find a new hobby that also helps too.

Don't be hungry. You don't need to be hungry and you're likely to pack it in if this continues. Listen to the advice from moreless, TheAwfulToad and Concerned and have a breakfast like Steelad's. Start eating enough of the right foods and you'll be off to a great start :)

Take it a step at a time and only do it because it's something you want for yourself.

All the previous replies are absolutely right about eating enough. But I would like to add this - ask yourself, are you really hungry, or is it just a craving, because you are used to snacking more often? Make yourself a cup of tea, when that craving comes over you, and while you drink it, make a list of things you could do to distract yourself until the craving passes - painting your nails is a good one! I found cutting out ALL added sugar and all foods with refined sugars in them (which I did to reduce migraines, and it has been pretty effective in that respect) has completely taken away my craving for anything sweet. Hope that helps.

I have about the same to lose, and it does seem daunting.

We think about food far more when we want to lose weight don't we. I am not helped by the fact that at this very moment my partner is cooking up a storm with sausages and bacon!!

Distraction, and thinking of weigh in as a positive are a couple of tricks to try, hope it helps

hi.. I started 3 wks ago and set myself mini monthly goals to lose 7lbs each month... this would mean that by the end of year i would have lost the 6stone i want to lose.. so far ive lost 8.5lbs this month so I'm ahead and feeling good about myself.. don't look at the big picture and instead set yourself small achievable goals and it will give you the motivation to continue .. so make sure you enjoy what your eating and watch your portion sizes and you will suceed ... good luck x

Well, I am new to this so can't offer much advice. I had maybe a little under 3 stone to lose and I have lost about 10lb so far. I do get a bit hungry and I think maybe I am going too quickly. I am a bit hungry now but it is almost 13:00 and I have not had any lunch yet. Mini targets definately sounds like a good way to go. I have set myself a modest target of 7lb by Easter. That way I can be pleased if I make it but have not set myself up for likely failure. I would rather hit my target and feel good than miss an overly unrealistic taget and give my self-esteem a kicking. Good luck.

That's good hunger, Bogmonster, you should be hungry at lunchtime !It shows your body is starting to recognise proper hunger pangs, not just cravings.

PS I'm sure you will exceed your target.

I think I am just getting used to eating properly in the mornings etc. I have been used to eating biscuits at night (all night) and then biscuits with my morning tea and no proper breakfast. I know from experience that it takes me three days to get into a good routine and today is day three so I’m not worried about being hungry!

Don't give up - you do not have to lose weight the first week.

You can cut down gradually, and get your body to get energy from your stored fat - instead of just demanding more food.

Try setting a time after which you do not eat - I started at 19:30 - and gradually brought it forward until I was not eating after 14:00!

You could try setting a smaller target to help boost your focus.. Say getting into the next stone bracket or fitting into something smaller

Thanks guys. Nearly at the end of my first week and it has got easier as the week has gone on. Missing my chocolate biscuits tho need to find a healthy alternative ;)
