BMI

Do these BMI stats really make any sense ? Just had a look and according to the chart I need to lose 5 stone - is that really possible ? Cannot think that I have ever been such a low weight, even before the children.

I only use it as a rough guide, im aiming for the top end as you say i havent ever been near 7st and wont do it now. I personally recommend getting to a size you feel happy and healthy at.

One step at a time JOGGAJU. NICE guidelines encourage a loss of 3%, and keeping it off.

Where does that put you in the scale? I am always at the top end but at 5ft.61/2insand size 10 okay occasionally 12😜 I feel right. Went to 23 BMI lat December and the pics were not that flattering

Be careful not to get too hung up on BMI im 21 relatively fit and healthy and am classed as 'Obese'. It has no way of checking fat vs muscle, the best measurement to go by is your waist measurement :)

Hello Joggaju

I think the BMI measurement is just an indicator of what would be a healthy weight for age and height although I wouldn't attempt to reach the lower end of mine. I'm 56, 5'1" and weigh 11st 8lbs (yes, 'obese' is a horrible, painful word). The BMI calculator gives me a score of 30.7 and a healthy weight range between 6st 14lbs (isn't that 7st?) and 9st 7lbs. A few years ago I weighed around 9st and was a slim, healthy size 12 so if I could get back to that I would be really pleased. The last time I was 7st I was ill and being prescribed Build Up diet supplements to help me gain weight!

Just find a weight that you are comfortable with - if your husband is pleased that's a bonus but do it for you!

I have lost a lot of weight. My BMI was Obese. Frightening. I am now very close to the cut off point with BMI Category "Healthy". I have decided to stay around this BMI. The main reason is that at my age (68) a couple of wrinkles have appeared on my face and I don't like them very much. The other reasons are: I look the perfect size, I am now really fit, very healthy, eating healthy and loving life. Although I am still loosing a few grams every week, i am not desperate anymore. The moral of this story is : do what you think is best for you. Aim for the BMI they suggest but as you loose weight decide where you are happy and where you want to be and just stay there.

Ps: it is a wonderful world to be slimmer instead of obese 💃🏻

Why do you need to loose 5 stone - to get into the top or middle of the healthy BMI range? If so acceptance is the first step of making changes. But you need more than a number to motivate weight loss. Why is health important to you - because you want to be fit enough to keep up with family , play or sport, follow a hobby, because you hate doctors and the thought of taking lots of pills and constantly having tests...

May be you only have enough motivation and belief you can succeed at changing some unhealthy habits - eg permission snacking or bingeing when stressed or.. or... and those might be more realistic targets than a NUMBER!

My current weight is 16st and I am 5' 10" tall. According to the charts I have seen I should be 5st less than that !!! I need motivation as it has seriously been lacking over the past 3 yrs since I lost my Mum in a house fire. I comfort ate and drank to much wine too. I know where my errors lie and I have stopped the frequent glasses of wine, for health reasons too. I have started going for a swim three times a week now to build myself up. I will succeed but I may need a little help along the way when the going gets tought - I have been on antidepressants for 3 yrs too - which I would really like to be able to stop once I feel better in myself..................

sounds like you are doing a lot of changes already. Try the CBT approach - Overcoming Weight Problems by someone Grace and another - written by a dietician and psychiatrist - about changing our lives and habits of thought and action for the long term rather than trying to import a whole programme lock stock and barrel and then failing cos it was an awkward fit amongst other things.
