Paying for a copy of your medical notes?

My wife finished some treatment at a NHS acute trust. We need a clinical summary for followup private treatment, but were asked to pay for a copy of the medical notes. is this common practice, if so, what are the standard charges? i feel this is an inappropriate charge to be levied on someone... it should be free.

Hello

Generally charges are shown on the reception desk, some charges may be different in other practices.

When you consider this is for private treatment, this charge seem very probably correct

I too would go down the lines of a Freedom of Information Act request. They can charge a small fee for the admin involved which would be on the hospital trust's website. To get your own back you could ask for everything they have on you! I did the same to another public body that had annoyed me...............They ended up having to print off hundreds of pages which cost me just a fiver. There are also strict time scales involved.
