Getting your own room after birth

Hi all,

For those who have had their babies during this Coronavirus pandemic, who wanted your own room, whether it’s amenity room or private room in the hospital, and was able to get one? This whole pandemic gets me really worried with being in the ward. How did you find the measures at your hospital, if any, to prevent infection if someone did have coronavirus?

Hi, I had our little boy on the 6th and I had my own room for induction, labour and a shared room after but only with me in. Id had a hospital stay prior to having him and was in a room of 4. Had coronavirus swabs taken when I went in for induction. All midwives had masks who were in close contact and washing hands etc was very visable when entering private room. I felt very comfortable in the hospital as it was a lot better than expected. Good luck! hope xxx

I can only give my experience, I had my baby girl 5 weeks ago and I can only praise my hospital. Spacing had been rearranged on the ward to only accommodate 2 beds instead of the usual 4 that would be in a bay.

I was lucky because I had a bay to myself the whole time I was on the ward, and then on delivery suite you get your own room anyway.

There was a lady on the ward who was symptomatic and she was in a room by herself, they were calling these the isolation rooms so I didnt really want to be in one of those rooms.

Everyone on the ward was fantastic, and I mean that from the bottom of my heart, I tear up even now when I think about it, from the ladies who brought my meals and cuppas, to the midwives, to the consultants, I literally couldn't have done it without them (hubby was only allowed in delivery suite and I was in being induced for 3 days prior) They were all apologetic that they were having to wear PPE, as it was all alien to them, but of course I understood why they had to.

It's really weird because you go into a little bubble when you go into hospital, but just ask questions if you're worried, they will be only too happy to help you as they know it's a worrying time for you.

I am literally freaked out and have been told we can’t even pay for an amenity room as they would be used to isolate coronavirus patient, and the private ward wouldn’t take in NHS patients worrying of infection risks.

I noticed you both had induction a few days before labour. Was it for any medical reason? I heard induction is being encouraged now due to the lack of facilities and busy-ness of the hospital. I’d like to have a natural birth and avoid it unless it’s fore medical reason

My little boy was measuring big so they were worried his shoulders might get stuck. He didn't and came out at 8lb 11oz of chunk 💙 I was really worried about induction being more painful but tbh I didn't have any other birth to compare it to so it was just a case of getting stuck in! It was nice to have it a little planned really with the virus and everything, felt like there was an element of control to it all x

I was induced because I was overdue and I had high blood pressure which was only brought on by the Covid situation. I was like you and was petrified towards the end of my pregnancy and I'd even get anxious going for my check ups at the hospital. like you I wanted a natural birth but was advised by 2 different consultants that this was the safest option.

I ended up with an emergency section as she just wasn't budging and she moved back to back when I was labouring so couldn't have been more different to the scenario in my head! She weighed 9lbs 2oz so maybe just aswell she didn't come the conventional way!

At the end of the day you'll just want your baby here safe and sound 🥰
