Just need a bit of reasurance i think.

For the past 4 days I have had really bad back pain that came out the blue. its around the SI joints (the dimples at the bottom of the spine) so more back of pelvis than the back its self.

I can't walk more than 100m's at snail pace before I seize up, I keep getting stuck in all sorts of positions, such as bending down i get half way then freeze unable to stand up or continue to bend, (anyone looking through the window must wonder what I'm doing). i can't pick up anything remotley heavy including my handbag. and i get comfey for a bit only for the wave of pain to come and i have to try and find another position. the only time its ok is when I'm asleep as I take amitriptyline to help me sleep which is also a pain relief.

Dr would only give me a telephone appointment and to go in on Friday if no better and told me to take paracetmol and take it easy.

so my question to you lovely ladies is, could this be due to the pregnancy and my joints just moving to accomadate bump or could it be more to do with supervising everyone helping me move home at the weekend? (no one would allow me to touch anything or do anything though).

should I be concerened or not especially as I can't work like it.

Sounds like could possibly be sciatica or caught some other nerve. Does pain run down into your leg? Amitriptyline is for nerve pain so sounds like is definitely a nerve of some kind. Hopefully it might ease on its own, if not gp might refer to physio who should be able to give you exercises to help release it. Prob you've just moved in slightly the wrong way or baby put weight in a diff place, very easily done, esp when pregnant. Hope gets better x

thanks, the pain only goes down as far as the buttocks. and is mainly on one side but has started to go on the other too. think you could be right with it been nerve related. the joys of bringing another life into the world. :)

thank you for your reply

I assume you take the amitryptiline for reasons other than pain but it is good to benefit from its action on trapped nerves. During pregnancy our centre of gravity changes which means also our posture. This often puts strain on your back resulting in trapped nerves. Also adding the tiredness of moving house can make it worse.

In addition to the drugs, you may find relief by using a TENS machine (you can buy or hire from NCT or pharmacies). You put little electrodes on your painful region and it delivers little pulses that scramble the pain message going from the back to the brain and thus feel less pain.

Another thing to consider is pregnancy friendly yoga. Clinical trials in chronic low back pain patients have shown that regular yoga practice can bring substantial pain relief. This is because it helps you strengthen the back pain muscles which them support your skeleton and posture better.

Last but not least it would be worthwhile visiting an osteopath or chiropractor specialising in pregnancy. I had bad back pain and he realigned my pelvis which relieved the pain totally. He gave me a couple of stretches to do at home to keep things supple. Good luck!

Yeah I take the amitryptiline to help me sleep at night due to having chronic fatigue syndrome and fibomylogia. I was learning to cope with the pain until I fell down the last couple of steps of the stairs landing so that the bottom step hit me just where the back pain was. Now not sure what pain was the original (gp reckons just due to being pregnant) and what is due to the fall.

Baby brain has really taken hold of me too I was baking a cake and instead of putting the egg in the bowl I covered the work surface in it. Dreading going back to work as who knows what I'll do there but getting fed up with being stuck at home with lots to do but unable to do a any of it.

Sorry for going on just going a bit syir crazy on my own as hubby works very long hours and we only just moved house last week
