I need your opinions. Yesterday, 12/26 I sat a lot & wrote thank you notes & watched football. Then I felt guilty about sitting so much & forced myself to do 20 minutes on my recumbent bicycle.
This morning, my glands are swollen & my throat is sore. So much so, I am not going to work. Instead, I am scheduled to see an NP in a few hours for (hopefully) an injection of something strong.
I can hardly walk today. (Miss Independent had to have help getting out of the shower). Did I sit too much? Did I over do on the bicycle? Is it my sore throat & glands? Or is this a relapse? Many thanks!

Hi Mollyabigail, I am sorry that you aren't feeling well this morning. This is my reaction- No, I don't think it a relapse. No, I don't think your symptoms are related to yesterday's activities. I am very glad that you have an appt. with a NP, because I suspect you may have a virus or possibly even strep throat. Please feel better, and keep us posted. Did you have a Flu shot this fall? Linda
hi Molly, i agree with Linda. you did not cause a relapse. and can't cause a relapse! when I'm feeling sick it affects my walking. my immune system is down and that has an effect on my weakest parts. PS, a relapse has to last more than 24 hours. Please don't feel guilty for sitting and/or biking. that is a no win situation.
I also have a sore throat. it's going around. Please let us know how you are doing.
in my experience and that is small, i only had two relapses. both had to do with sudden vision changes. the treatment was cortisone/steroids. mostly i believe i don't have a lot of relapses due to being on disease modifying therapy. i've just seen a slow progression which can be something to be grateful for.
Yes. I am going back to be tested by a medical pro Wednesday morning. I learned about the COVID through 2 home tests kits. (both were positive). You would think they would have tested me Tuesday. But they did not. Rural medical care leaves a lot to be desired.
Dr Not Agrees. You are coming down with something. If you have M.S., when you come down with , or are coming down with something, it's kind of like computer overload, not a relapse. But if you want to think of it that way, go ahead. There are no rules in this game? But when you have M.S. as long as someone like myself, you get to believe in patterns of inconvenience, like I can't walk straight again today because....
Thank you, Mark. For two years now, I have been blessed with fairly good health despite the M. S., & it just scared me when suddenly I couldn't walk or stand at all.
1) sounds like you overdid it with the bike. Trust me do it to myself all the time. 2) I think you have a virus brewing, and that would contribute to the sore throat/swollen glands. 3) the combination of both together affected you for the shower making the shower probably way too much right now.
Hopefully youโll start to feel better. Ibuprofen usually helps me.
So sorry! Hope youโre feeling better soon. My neuro always tells me that sickness can exacerbate past MS symptoms. I guess from your immune system working in overdrive, inflammation and possible fever. When I get sick, the right side of my body feels weak (where Iโve had MS issues before). Take it easy and get some rest!
Relpses: suddenly going blind in one eye (Optic neuritis), developing virtigo . . . in only one eye. Having som part of you body go numb, or numb and tingly. You can't take a step because your leg locked up. Or, my favorite: you drop your chin to your chest and feel like someone pressed a tuning fork to your tailbone! Those are some of the many, man, many MS relapses. I was unable to see a neurologist for some 23 years after my diagnosis, so I had to run everybody wierdness through a little serious trial: HOW LONG HAVE I BEEN EXPERIENCING THIS WIERDNESS? A few days, but then it went away, or has it been a few weeks? Likely MS wierdness. Your symptoms sound more like a bug, flu, etc.. 20 inches of exercise might make muscles and joints hurt, but not MS. Now if you'd fallen over when you got off the equipment because your balance went suddenly AWOL and it hasn't gotten better for several weeks (6 to 12, in general), you may be experiencing a relapse.
Something I started doing with my new neurologist, (and now all my providers) I got a spiral notebook (like we had in school). I started writing down any health issue/symptom with the date, intensity, and any other things of note about it. And when I go to my provider, I take the notebook with me, open it up in front of the provider, so I can remember and talk to her/him about it with details. It has been very helpful! So much so my previous, neurologist would come over, grab my notebook and start going down all the items, and make sure all were discussed!
I see you are sick, but I'll throw in my relapse call rules since this is a common question here and some MD's have different rules or some don't call when they should (guilty).
Loss of function (vision, extremity, bowel/bladder) is probably a trip to ED but my office might do in home IV steroids now, I hope never to find out. Anything new or old but worse, lasting more than 24hrs is an office call or email to work out what's needed.
You're welcome! Btw, no one told me what my rules were before I had a relapse ๐ so when I was having one, the nurse fussed at me for not following rules I did not know about ๐ตโ๐ซ
Or maybe they did tell me, but I have MS so that info didn't stick ๐ซฃ๐คทโโ๏ธ Anyway, it's good to ask and maybe write down what you're suppose to call about.
