milk and MS inflammation

I’ve always question the association b/w dairy and MS exacerbation. This study gives me pause and a reason to at least do a trial off dairy (give up my yogurt).

I have been following Dr T Wahls diet for a couple years. I have PPMS. It is beneficial to me as well as weight loss. I use Kite Hill unsweetened almond yogurt

thanks for the yogurt suggestion. I tried the Wahls protocol way back. Thought I felt better but unfortunately, can't handle meat of fish (Is there a term for a poultry-aterian?)

Don't know any term. Do you eat tofu? I also like Forager Cashew milk yogurt. Hope that helps

I've never been a big fan of milk. I have it in my cereal and sometimes will have yogurt. But I will never sit down and have a glass of milk to drink.

I have been lactose intolerant my whole life, erash , so this article is very interesting to me. I took a food sensitivity test earlier this year and it said that I have issues with cow's milk and not just lactose. I was avoiding lactose, but now I am avoiding cow’s milk altogether! I never really liked milk because of how it makes me feel when I ingest it. I have been using oat milk and I feel better. Thank you for sharing this article with the forum! :-D

I'd have to have an antibody test before I gave up dairy again 🤣 There's A2 , goat/sheep, and plant yogurts now though, the world is your experiment oyster! 🎉

Though I've never been a milk drinker, I have a herd share for 1/2 gal of certified, organic raw A2 milk weekly, and a pint of cream once a month. I use these in many different ways: yogurt, cheese, whipped cream, etc. The protein profile of A2 milk is different from most milk sold in the US (which comes from Holstein cows).

That's awesome!

Something to ponder... Humans are the only species that when we wean our babies off of our own milk ... we start feeding them milk from another animal species.

Yes. And I wonder, why is that?🤔

It is strange that we ever began doing that. Probably because of the calcium. But still.

I gave up dairy entirely (along with becoming mostly pescaterian) after being diagnosed with ms. Not sure how much it contributed overall in addition to DMT but 1) I don't fell itchy anymore everywhere, 2) ms is not active.

Occasionally on vacation abroad, I start eating cheese. and itchiness starts within 3-4 days.

I believe cow milk is hard to digest for human, and adds to the inflammatory load that our body has to deal with.

i agree with all of the posts so far. I have been off dairy for a few years. i did feel a bit better without it. Cheese was hard to give up but whole foods has a brand of shredded mozzarella that i like. I also put oat milk in my coffee and oatmeal. works great.

in my research concerning dairy and MS, some experts believe fermented dairy is actually good for us (especially with my gastritis) and recommends Plain Greek yogurt. Also, aged cheese (extra sharp cheddar) in moderation seems to be okay for me. I enjoy drinking vanilla almond milk and almond frozen dessert (in place of ice cream). Works for me. I’ve also become gluten free, organic fruits and veggies, and no pre-packaged foods.

thank you and I agreed but the article identifies casein as the culprit and included yogurt. Albeit, 1 study does not = the final word.

If you stop to think about it... Cow's milk is for baby cows not humans. We can get the vitamins & minerals we need from other foods. Milk & dairy products made from milk can be inflammatory & very hard to digest. I eat very little dairy & feel so much better than when I used dairy a lot.

I don’t do much milk but I do yogurt and has never seem to bother my ms🤞🏼 I actually went two years with out milk when I had cancer going on and didn’t see any different symptoms. I probably drink a quart of milk every two weeks, oh almost forgot I do love ice cream 🍨 🤪😂

I developed lactose intolerance at 25 but it seems to be gone now. My family is all lactose intolerant so we regularly buy lactose free milk. I don’t drink it but on the occasions that I had ice cream, I had issues. One thing I noticed, prior to my diagnosis at 50, was that ice cream no longer bothers me. I was never really enamored by yogurt or cheese so cutting them out of my diet won’t really be an issue. Butter will hurt but the rest can go for experiments sake.

This is not too surprising to me.

Both my hub & I rarely have dairy anymore.

He has more immediate effects if he does indulge as it aggravates the arthritis & bursitis often within an hour of doing so.

Interesting. I'm anxious to see if my Neurologist may have some thoughts on this. Its easy to avoid Dairy. FYI Almond milk, coconut ice cream among others.
