Too Hot to Walk

GM, I live in the Northeast where we are in the middle of a heat wave. I got a puppy back in April for many reasons one was to get me back to walking. My gait is feeling stronger and the dog is behaving much better, only two falls while walking. Question - MS and hot weather or hot anything is often told to me to be careful. I’ve been walking early morning after all I did promise my dog and I have been feeling like crap later in the day. Feeling like all I want to do is sleep. Is heat a real thing for everyone with MS or is it one of those thing that could cause us issues. On a good note Bella will let me work without disruption for a few hours she is wiped out.

Bella is so cute :)

Heat is definitely a problem for me and is why I have two fans on when I work out.

I could schedule exercise for early morning before it gets hot but that's the last thing I feel like doing at 4:30 am.

😅

She makes me so happy I lost my last dog Nov 2019 we waited so long she is a blessing. She’s spunky and can be fresh we are learning each other. Very trainable it’s the humans that are tuff to train 🤣

not everyone has problems with heat but i do so i also do the walks first thing in the morning and late at night ...i does make me feel better to get the walks in ...now we can't do much walking for all of the smoke we are getting from all of the fires here and other states north of us and south of us...really bad...the heat and air are in record highs ...be careful ...we are wearing masks if we do have to be outside ...love and much happiness,....

Yes, heat is a real thing. BUT, I've noticed, and scientifically verified by taking a trip to Phoenix/Scottsdale, when they were having those non-stop 115° days several summers ago. I used to live in El Paso, and never minded the heat (pre-M.S. days) as long as I drank lots and lots of water. I could be in the sun all afternoon in that heat, and feel great. Went through gallons of water, but felt great. Just don't touch the metal on the dashboard, it would leave burns. But anyway, yes, years later, with cooling vests, cooling wraps, you name it, nothing really did the trick here in the Midwest's heat and humidity. So, what do I do? I use a dehumidifier full time in the house (much cheaper than the air conditioning full time, which works as well). But then a window unit in one room, not the whole house. Again, cheaper. BUT, that room will be as cold as that little A/C can go. It's my personal cooling center. With that, I can do the heat again. Retreating to my cooling center when getting overheated. But outside in this last heatwave, yeah, very short exposure to that hot HUMID air is all I can take. Luckily, the forecast is that it has cooled down. So enjoy!

As far as the dog. Cute. But a cat you don't have to walk. In fact, try walking one. They don't. Though I just saw something on line about the world's most talented cat, made the Guinness World Record book, really entertaining. biggeekdad.com/2021/08/the-...

Heat affects me. If we are working in the yard and it's pretty warm to hot I get this feeling when it's time to go in. I've learned to pay attention to it. If I ignore it, I'm down for several days after.

Heat is rough for me as well! I’m better this summer, but need ways to escape. I start feeling lightheaded/dizzy and I know it’s time to cool down. I’m learning that if I listen to my body and get out of the heat when I get that feeling, I do much better. Cooling vests/neck wraps, spray fans and misters help a lot too!

I like the idea of a dog to help walking! I need the same encouragement. I am not bothered by the heat (knock on wood) and pray that it will never affect me! Other MS members have told me that it will. I am a Northeasterner too and live in New England.

Dog is a motivator for sure make it about her needing exercise not me seems more like I have no choice. Good luck getting motivated
