On 12/18/20 I had a bad fall due to my walking just getting worse and worse. I have PPMS and have managed to stay walking, I guess, sorta.... I did three week of a very intensive rehab program at a hospital nearby. The program is for those who have accidents with a neurological condition. MS is one of the 18 conditions that qualify. The did OT and PT with me four times a day among other things. Had some tough conversations with the doctors, Pts and OTs there. Basically I can and will walk again, atleast somewhat, but how safe is it especially with my severe spacicity and balance problems. They got me this really nice motorized wheelchair my insurance will pay for mostly. After using it for 3 to 4 weeks I will probably be more independent using it then I have been in 5 years and that's great, but it's not something that one just throws in the back of the car. It weighs 240lbs! So now I'm looking at getting a wheelchair drivable van but they are so expensive. I already have the restriction on my driver license to drive with hand controls.
How do people pay for these things? Normally there are grant assistance programs out there to help, but with Covid it seems like no one has any money right now!
Thanks

Hi palomino27 glad you're doing better! And honestly I wouldn't know where to start finding that info.. you can try calling MSAA. They might be able to point you in the right direction! Toll-Free Helpline (800) 532-7667
So sorry about your fall! I have had my share and have scars from some of them. I tell people that one of the benefits of getting older is the scars blend in with my wrinkles and you have to look hard to see which is which! 😄
I am really sorry to hear about your fall! I am not sure of your condition now with stamina and such but maybe for now you could use a walker with wheels and hand brakes. When you get tired you can lock the brakes and sit on the seat to rest.Use a cane or walking sticks?? Just a suggestion .
That's the type of thing I did before the broken hip. I was barely walking then. I can still walk a bit with a walker now the hip is healing and all this PT, but I think it's just time to use the motorized wheelchair so I do not get hurt again. I'm really trying to keep up my leg strength as much as possible so I can do transfers, etc. And still be as independent as possible. But geez, my legs are a new level of weak!😵My wife left me in July....
