1977 Diet Book for MS: "MS patients...are attractive" :)

β€’32 Replies

Hope you get a kick out of this:

Soon after my MS diagnosis, I bought "The Multiple Sclerosis Diet Book" by Roy Swank and Barbara Dugan. It was originally published in 1977. My neurologist emphasized having a healthy diet, so I got this book in the hopes that it would provide me with food ideas and recipes that would allow me to be as healthy as possible under the circumstances.

But, man, it provided me with so much more! Just the highlighted line in particular was enough to make me laugh hysterically: MS patients "are usually attractive." I mean, there I was- terrified of this incurable, debilitating disease... thinking my whole life would be changing for the worst... and BAM! Only hotties get this disease??! WOW!

So, if you are ever feeling unattractive or schlubby, don't fret. You're a beautiful, gorgeous, majestic specimen of a human being. It has been written, so shall it be. Now I'm off to skip around my living room in my pajamas, singing, "I feel prettyyyyyy! Oh so prettyyyyyy!!" :)

The things that were said about people with MS back then (even if it was well-intended) were almost darkly fascinating. But I love how a few sentences down from the highlighted part it says: "they become very well informed about their disease through reading and discussions with one another" It's so true! I mean, look at our group! ❀️

Lol love this and your post made me laugh

YAY! Aw that makes me happier than you know. Love that I could bring you a little laughter today 😊

πŸ‘πŸ˜‚πŸ˜„πŸ‘That was great thanks πŸ™

I’m kind stuck on the words...”usually β€œ and β€œirritable β€œβ€”-πŸ˜‚πŸ‘

β€’ in reply to

To be fair, you can't go through what we go through and NOT get a case of the grumpies every once in a while 😬

I'm now stuck on the "It is, therefore, very difficult if not impossible to keep informing concerning their disease from them." Like, who is keeping info from MS patients?? Why would you do that? Highly suspicious.... 🀨

That made me laugh. Thank you, the image of you skipping around the room in your pyjamas, singing I’m so pretty, πŸ˜‚πŸ€£ if only I could skip I would join you.

β€’ in reply tojimeka

So glad I could bring you some cheer today! I'd like to imagine you singing along with me❀️ We don't have to skip. In fact, it's probably for the best- my gait disturbance has made me very clumsy... I have that sexy MS after all πŸ˜‚

Yup. Well. Talk about a load of old cobblers and totally unscientific stereotyping. The whole of that page is about as useful as Swank's diet is, but unfortunately some people still seem to get sucked into doing it even though it's more than 40 years old now and science does not support its underlying principles. It could almost be funny if it were not so awful. As for the statement that if the characteristics listed are not present then a different diagnosis should be considered - the term BS is waaaay too mild to be used for that little "gem" of misinformation. Even worse, to attempt to withhold medical information from someone is such a totally outdated practice that burning of such books could almost be considered an appropriate course of action..........

If you really want to "do" diet for your MS then the most sensible thing to do is adopt the Mediterranean style diet (which at least has solid proper scientific evidence to back up that it's good for you), and you don't even have to have MS to benefit from that way!

β€’ in reply toFrances_B

You have hit the nail on the head- the whole page (in fact, the whole book) is pretty much nonsense. Needless to say, I have never used any recipe or advice from it. I kept it for entertainment purposes (maybe I have a sick sense of humor), but I am shocked that it is still in circulation and somewhat popular considering how outdated it is.

The Mediterranean style diet is fantastic! Delicious AND healthy ❀️ Thank you for the suggestion

I've also read somewhere that MS is a "rich person's disease." So we are pretty and rich!

β€’ in reply toIFwczs

Really??! That is good to know! Now can someone please get this very important info to my bank account immediately? Apparently it hasn't gotten the memo about me being rich πŸ˜‚

Now you are just being greedy. Attractive and rich?

What's going on (other than the pandemic)?

β€’ in reply toIFwczs

Lost my job in Aug (after I disclosed my MS, I was terminated), so now I'm in a legal battle there. My health coverage has been spotty since I lost my job (due to clerical errors from both the county and state healthcare offices), so I have not been able to consistently get my medication. There have been environmental stressors such as increased crime and violence in my area, so I've been hearing gunshots and sirens every night for the past few months... There is plenty more, but this is as much of a Debbie Downer as I'd like to be at the moment 😬

I just keep looking for the good in all the chaos- My lawyer is on top of it with my case, my health insurance situation is making slow but steady progress, I am inside my apartment 98% of the time so I have been safe... But I can always use the added delusion of being pretty and wealthy to help bolster my spirits, even if it does make me seem "greedy" πŸ˜…

I am very sorry to hear that. I will private-message you later today.

β€’ in reply toIFwczs

You're very kind. But no need to be sorry; I have survived worse. And it's funny how the universe works- About an hour after I replied to you, I got contacted for a job interview 😊
