I found this statement an interesting thought

On the today show someone mentioned they heard in a sermon, stop asking why and start thinking what am I going to do now. I found this to be a interesting thought and starting thinking what can I do differently now and stop crying about why. We dont know the why and I assume it will be some time before we are even able to fathom the why, so how can I be the greatest new me that I can be.

If you take those pragmatic words to heart, you will be better able to direct your course. Though no one wants to be diagnosed with MS, asking unanswerable questions and shedding tears lead only to depression. Most of us cry at some point in this journey, then pull up our socks and go forward. So, what are you going to do now? What's your first small act? Let us know!

There are many things that have come to mind. I am a smoker and trying to quit, just got chantix to help with that. I want to start DDP yoga to see if it helps. I am a chef and can't do that anymore, my body really doesn't like any part of the heat, freezer, hours, you know all of the parts of the job. So I am staring by trying to get short term disability so I can start putting my new life together. I have been in the restaurant business for 22 years now and I have always been career driven. This will be a big change for me and I figure one piece at a time. There has already been enough forced change for me and I don't wanna try doing too much all at the same time.

All those options sound promising. Most of us here understand about the inability to continue doing work we once loved and looked forward to. Like Jes, I too am a former smoker, so we know how hard it is to quit. Sitting on the back steps after the work day ended, having a cigarette as I watched the sun settle behind the hills was one of my favorite times of the day. Though I no longer miss the smoke, I do miss marking the end of a hard day with a routine, but as you will, I found other ways to shed stress and anxiety. As you initiate new routines and ways to practice self-care, don't guilt yourself if it doesn't happen overnight, or somehow you took on too much at once. It takes time. Give yourself that gift.

I like this! I know the initial thought when being diagnosed for many people is the why. I think that's very normal but it's necessary to transition to the what portion as soon as possible to keep from being stuck.

That was a very wise preacher. The Bible says to get up and serve. Getting up meaning taking care of yourself so you can also help others. As you help others you will cease being selfish & self-centered so you won't be feeling sorry for yourself. It's a pretty good plan.

I had a therapist give me a Buddhist quote, "In my world, nothing goes wrong." It took me a while but I finally figured it out. I try to remember it.
