Woke up this glorious morning screaming with the worst whole gastrocnemius muscle spasm of my life. I thought it might separate bones from tendons. Pulling the anckle away from the leg did finally stop it. Now others are occurring here and there but only with little muscles.
If you have had such a problem, tell me what you did to alleviate it immediately, and then to prevent it from happening.
I take Mg almost every day (it tastes so bad to me I am repelled),
What am I missing in this picture?
Thank you in advance.

Sounds similar to what I dealt with the last week, the MS hug. Awoke to what felt like hand was grabbing my rib cage and Squeezing. Made me sick, thought "flu" but was not. Took half a Baclofen and was back in bed until Wednesday and today feeling back to my MS normal. SO FRUSTRATING!
Hello Bodega1939 First Welcome to the forum! You have a glorious smile!
For my spasticity, I take baclofen but in a small dose, 10mg, and I take right before I go to bed as that is usually when my left leg decides to spasm. Go figure.
You also mention that you take magnesium, and in liquid form, I think, because you mention that you don't like the taste of it? I too, take magnesium, as Dimagnesium Malate, in pill form, and there is no taste. There are many forms of magnesium out there, but I have found this one to be the best one for me. I hope that you find something that will work for you but you should let your medical team know of this development.
I am afraid you have to go with the flow, it’s hard, what’s worst is you never know when it’s going to happen. You must tell your neurologist or doctor. Write it down so that you don’t forget every little detail, let us know how you get on, Blessings Jimeka 🦋
Thank you, Jimeka. What an absolutely miserable experience that was. My muscle is still sore as are the joints above and below. Now I dread going to bed. Criminy.
Happens so often from my feet to my calves to my thighs to the MS hug. Baclofen never worked for me. I have found that a few drops of CBD oil under my tongue before bed help keep the night cramps and jerking away at night. If the cramps come during the day, I take the few drops and they go away within about 10 minutes (except the hug)
Bodega1939 I too take Mg supplements. They seem to help a bit, but occasionally, when I have walked longer than MS thinks I should, I get these spasms at night. As you describe, stretching the muscle helps, but what also helps is a remedy I learned on People's Pharmacy. I keep a few yellow mustard packets on my nightstand. When one of these spasms starts, I tear open a packet and squeeze the contents directly into my mouth. The shock of that seems to cause the nervous system to respond to the sharpness and distract from the spasm. There is an actual scientific explanation for this but I've forgotten it. So, if you see mustard stains on my pillow, no I haven't been eating hot dogs in bed!
Thank you, goatgal. I will begin looking and reading. It is hard to believe the muscle is still hypersensitive 24+ hours later. I did undoubtedly exceed my walking limit the day I went to get my art juried. I think I was so ebullient afterwards I just kept walking! ... maybe I will learn there are real limits now. Dang.
I have had spasms for the past ten years in my legs. I keep powdered Pedialyte in the cupboard that if needed I could mix up and chug down on days that I might have gotten dehydrated. I also took baclofen 30mg twice a day. If and when the cramp started I used an ice pack immediately to stop the cramp. Since I have been on Ocrevus I haven't had that problem and I don't have to take baclofen anymore either. Hope you can find a solution that works for you.
Thank you. I will discuss this with my neurologist when I see him. It is hard to see the specialist of my care in a timely manner. The VA just doesn't work like that...appointments are always met by them (and they are on top of almost everything), otherwise the patient goes to the Emergency Room and then it's sort of a crap shoot. Some of the ER docs are fantastically good...others.....?
I also take magnesium let me Telya that pill I can choke on that and the other side affect is that it’s scrapes the inside of my throat as it goes down. Which in many ways it’s not good because I won’t take it all the time. My spasms I end up trying to stretch out my legs and toes some times it works and other times it doesn’t. I just live with it. I know that’s not the answer you wanted to hear hopefully someone else has a better answer.
