My 10 year old son and his bad skin
Dear Mandy,
I am so sorry to hear about your son. I have eczema and suffered very much like your son when I was a child. Please get your GP to refer you to a dermatologist at the hospital. Keep pestering - this is what my mom did - or get a second opinion from another GP. You must get referral to a hospital dermatologist.
Please get in contact with the National Eczema Society at eczema.org/
They have a helpline and lots of information to help and somebody to talk to.
Maybe you could try wet-wrapping your son - it certainly helped me to seal the cracked skin I had. Again the NES will be able to provide further details.
But please keep pestering your GP.
Hope this has helps!
Hi Mandy, so sorry to hear of your sons suffering, I have a 6 year old son who has suffered with eczema all his life and it just feels like a never ending battle sometimes. If you are not already under a dermatologist do ask your GP to refer you, although I have to say I found most of them pretty useless, the most help we have had is from a dermatology nurse but again you have to be referred. The only time my son has ever had a break from the itching is when he has been put on a course of oral steroids. I know a lot of people dont like using them in children but just to see your child not suffering, even just for a couple of weeks is so worth it. It also gives you a much needed break from constantly stopping them scratching and sleepless nights, and lets them get some proper rest too. It also means you can lay off the topical steroids for a while giving the skin a break. My son was on them for a month back in March and He was like a different kid, so confident and happy. Hope this helps a bit, sometimes I think it helps to know others are in the same position, it can be very lonely as no-one really understands it unless they experience it themselves
