Erythema Ab Igne (aka Toasted Skin Syndrome)

Hi all,

New to this community and major suffer of skin issues (main is full body eczema, for 5 of the 8 types) but wanted to ask if anyone else has this EAI or toasted skin syndrome?? I’ve got IBS resulting in chronic cramping (plus been female, once a month it’s tripled in pain to point I cannot move it hurts that much) that’s only really lessened by a heatpack so I have one practically 24/7 when I’m at home...and I’ve noticed a strange mottling vein or not like pattern in a bruise colour shade across my abdomen where my heatpack usually sits! It doesn’t hurt or itch or anything, just looks little odd...

Doc wasn’t sure what it was when I last asked him bout it but I did some of my own research then found this condition which fits it perfectly.

One catch is that the best way to fix it before it becomes permanent is to stop the heat source....which so doesn’t work for me given pain killers don’t work at all and nothing else I’ve tried does either.

Anyone gives tips or advice on managing or treating this aside from removing the heat source?? Any tips would be appreciated thanks!

Hi keira9653,

Use a heating pad that plugs in instead of a heating pack (i.e., chemical with adhesive or the kind heated in the microwave). The latter ends up cooking your skin. The mottled appearance will soon turn to a leathery, tanned look. You want to try to avoid that.

Older heating pads used to cause the same problems. But, the newer ones are much better.

They are programmed to heat up to a higher temp for a few minutes to really heat up the tissue and muscle. Then the temp automatically reduces to low, which helps you maintain warmth in the tissues without the cooking effect. You can set timer for 2 hrs or continuous.

I use Sunbeam XL. You can buy it on QVC. It is the length of your back, soft, padded velour material, washable, and available in pretty colors. It is rectangular in shape. I have used this same model for ten years. I have never found a better one. I use mine constantly and have only had to replace about 4 times. But, I wouldn't care if I had to replace it yearly. It is that good.

Hope the info helps🙂
