My mum had a an op on her forehead for basal skin carcinoma. The scar on her forehead is 7 "long. Now it's itchy and lumpy. What can she do?

She had the operation 3 months ago.She still can't go to the hairdressers as it's sore or risk any hair colour or perming, how long should she wait? How can she best treat the scar? Many thanks, Karen

Hi Karen, I hope your mum has recovered well from her surgery, aside from the annoying scarring. I also have a scar running from my hairline to my eyebrow, from plastic surgery following removal of a basal cell carcinoma. I started massaging Bio Oil into my scars as soon as they were healed (maybe a week after stitches came out). I found that massaging a couple of times a day for about 5 or 10 minutes really helped with the itching and stiffness in the scars.

I can completely sympathise with the frustration of not being able to get your hair looking how you want it after surgery. I think I waited about 3 months before I dyed my hair. To make sure I didn't irritate my scar, I covered the part closest to my hairline with vaseline, to stop any hair dye coming into contact with it. I'm not sure whether that would be good enough protection from perm lotion or any kind of bleaching hair dye, as I think they are a bit more potent than a home hair dye pack. It might be best to wait until the scar is less sore before using those.

I hope your mother finds something that helps make her scar a bit more comfortable to live with really soon.

Thanks for your advice, I think the bio oil is worth a try, and massaging the scar too. I'll let her know. She's frustrated with not going to the hairdressers so we will try vasaline to protect the area. Cheers

Sorry I don't have a recent photo, she's in the uk and I'm in oz. She is not keen on going to the docs again. I will tell her about her scar treatment options. Thanks for your reply.

There are a variety of things to consider - including a sort of sellotape dressing that can be put onto the scar overnight whilst in bed - it depends on the actual appearance of the scar - but usually something will help - take correct advice ASAP

PS I wold be very very careful about liquid nitrogen - this might aggravate it
