Can anyone answer this : is diarrhoea a symptom of MSA ? I have read that constipation is a symptom. My husband seems to get diarrhoea out of nowhere. Even before he’s really eaton much.

My wife is in to her 7th year with this cruel disease, she has been bed ridden for the last 17 months at home. Had loads of trouble with both diarrhoea and constipation we seem to have it under control now. Plenty of fluids and Laxido - but we haven't followed the instruction of 2 sachets every day. We use 1 sachet every other day and spread it over 2 days - keep in fridge covered with cling film. Sounds crazy but has worked for us. Good luck !

Hi there Thankyou for the info so many mixed messages on the subject of constipation verses diarrhea. At least we know it seems part of this illness which is wicked !

Thankyou again take care m.

Is he on antibiotics? Mum suffers from this when she is on antibiotics. If not, perhaps look at his diet and is it too high in fruit and fibre? And probiotics also encourages bowel movements.

Hi there Thankyou for your reply, no he isn’t on antibiotics. I don’t think it’s fibre as he doesn’t eat enough in my mind. But it seems many people do suffer with diarrhoea!

Thankyou again take care

My husband has diarrhoea and we have been told by the MSA Consultant that this can be a symptom of MSA. She has taken blood tests to try to rule out other causes and we are awaiting a gastroenterology appointment. Currently we are giving him Loperamide twice a day. This does not entirely solve the problem but I am reluctant to increase the dose when so many professionals have been telling me that he must be constipated.

Hi there Thankyou for your reply. My husband has had test done too check his bowels out as well as the other end. Nothing came out of the tests. We are seeing consultant next month but it does seem many people with MSA do get diarrhea.

I did have an aunt who had diarrhoea often and the hospital kept saying she actually had constipation!

Thankyou again take care

Hello,

That used to be our biggest issue, explosive diarrhea with no notice. It was worse when we were out as you can imagine, operation cleanup is not so easy in the middle of a shopping centre or cafe.

Thankfully over time this has calmed down, we don't know why but we're very pleased it doesn't affect us so much now.

This might be the case with your husband soon, fingers crossed for you.

Take care

Derek

Hi there, your words are exactly what happens to us. We haven’t ventured to a shopping centre yet can’t imagine the clear up ! How far into the illness are you ? My husband was diagnosed 2023 but in the last few months things are happening. But we think he’s had it longer.

Thankyou again for your words and let’s hope it eases up a bit.

Take care

Hello,

My wife was diagnosed in 2016 but it was obvious many years ago that something was wrong.

Started with balance and continence issues and now she needs help with everything.

Restricted to one room and we use a hoist to transfer from the bed to the wheelchair so we can get out.

She isn't on any meds for the MSA but does take meds for the stroke she had in October.

Take care and smile when you can.
