drinking cup

we have just ordered a Ehucon dysphagia drinking cup from Amazon as advised by a specialist nurse for our relative who is now having difficulty with swallowing and taking meds. Hopefully it will help. Not sure if anyone on this forum had tried one?

Never heard of that one but we have tried all sorts!!! Started with cups with a piece missing from the side, progressed to vintage invalid cups which look like little teapots which worked well for a long time, now use a 10 ml syringe

we use the ones with a lid and a little hole for a small straw to go through to save them tipping their head back as that often causes choking. Hope it helps. X

Hi

My Sue has swallowing issues and has had for some time. We have tried a few things such as the Pat Saunders drinking straws, which also restrict flow, but found that her ability to suck at a constant level was also difficult. Eventually we settled on a drinking cup that has a sealing plate that is also good against shakes it called a Smidge cup.

However, we realised many years ago that in order to help Sue maintain her food and liquid intake we would have to supplement her oral intake so we took the best decision and had a PEG fitted, this means that if the swallowing gets worse or Sue doesn't feel like eating I can feed through the PEG so she remains healthy. I would say this has increased Sues lifecycle by probably 5 years so far as it also protects against the risk of aspiration infections.

Paul & Sue

Plodding on regardless.

I would like to say I am in agreement with Paul and Sue regarding protecting from aspiration. My late husband would not use modified cups except a travel mug with a lid and he experienced aspiration significantly. This cup should be helpful though.

Krista

Best wishes.

gosh we have had draws, cups, beakers you name it’s in the cupboard!

Jon now has a peg but still occasionally uses a beaker which has a domed inside so as not to tilt the head.

The peg has been a life and game changer.

Don’t ever doubt its power when considering this step, don’t be hesitant go for it. Jon is 100% still here because of it.

Good luck x

Chris is almost totally peg fed now, just the occasional 10mls of coffee or espresso martini! But the peg feeding gives him horrendous reflux which actually gives him aspiration pneumonia, but we have no other choice. He has just started getting gulpy sort of hiccups several times a day
