I currently wall surf around the house trying hands free Outside I use a Walker, accompanied. Longer journeys i use a wheelchair or mobility scooter when I can. My question is should I continue to wall surf, use a Walker so i walk more accurately or use a walking stick?or continue to do what I can?

Hello there,

My advice would always do what keeps you safe and free from falls. The beast of MSA seems to take advantage of one when they are ill, eg a UTI or if one falls. Often a fall precipitates a worsening of other symptoms. So.. don’t be a hero….don’t worry what you look like…don’t be scared to have help…but don’t fall and stay safe!

Happy Christmas, Take care, Ian

My physio says don't furniture walk, use zimmer or 2 sticks in the house. The point is to minimise the risk of falling. 2 days ago I fell into the door of the wine store and hit my head on the wood (luckily not the metal handle) after furniture walking across dining room with no sticks.

I hope you’re okay. I’m. trying to get physio but even private ones are fully booked. Good advice.

We have found a lightweight indoor walker better than a zimmer, more stable and maneuverable, and much safer than furniture walking.

Hi,

Keep safe is the key. Using objects of varying hight, length, material, strength, slip and feel all can lead to a failure and a fall. As Ian has said a fall can lead to a change in symptoms for the worse and keeping this bastard of a condition to the minimum is all we can ever do.

So use devices that help you continue to walk whilst can.

Be safe and have a great Christmas.

Hello,

I don't know whether we are allowed links here but I use one of these..

It is vital though to bear in mind what others have said about falling. Also vital that you get the correct size for your height because if it's too short it'll make you hunch over it - very bad for general posture.

o saw a neuro nurse who advised I increase the height. We’ve done this. Thank you.

best course of action might be to speak to your GP/ hospital contacts and see about a physio/occupational health referral, they should then be able to assess and provide you with the right equipment. As with everyone else safety is key.
