Alternative therapies: Acupuncture

So - clearly there is no magic pill for MSA and my sister is deteriorating albeit gradually. As one of her carers I’ve personally had remarkable success with Acupuncture for conditions ranging from chronic pain to depression. I was wondering if anyone on our forum had any experiences to share about the efficacy of acupuncture for MSA/Parkinson’s?

Not tried it yet but am interested as they offer it at the hospice. I have just started going to the hospice once a week so will get more info next time. I find the "coathanger" pain particularly annoying some days so if it helps that would be great.

Not sure about acupuncture, sorry . I do take my husband to an Osteopath, however, (who does dry needling too, but not sure if he's ever used that on husband). He has a combined Osteo and clinical pilates session which he finds exceptionally helpful. As you say, there is no magic cure but it seems to help with strengthening and mobility, in addition to the work he does with his neuro physio. It also gets him out and about and interacting with others, which really helps his mental health too.

I forgot to say that the Osteopath's I've spoken to about MSA have actually heard of it (unlike my husbands GP,). Also to clarify, Osteopath's are allied health professionals, just like physios, so are classed as medical. They usually have a more holistic approach thought.

My wife had acupuncture for her neck pain as her neck leans to the right. The first lot of injections cost £620.We we’re told it could take up to 6 weeks to work it did work right away for the first week or so.We we’re advised to have a second lot of injections 6 weeks later at a cost of £220.This has done the trick as my wife no longer has the pain in her neck but her neck still leans to the right.We we’re told my the doctor it could take up to 12 to 18 months to get this done on the MHS.

Hi Ovx823k,May I ask how many sessions did your wife have and who gave the acupuncture?

That sounds rather expensive to me.

I am or was an acupuncturist I had to give up work just before lockdown, I came home from work too many times to find him on the floor unable to get up.
