MSA abductor paralysis

Could anyone tell me about abductor paralysis (abductor muscle of the vocal cord ) of MSA patients? Is this the late stage of MSA ? How can I care my husband when he gets it? I am very fearful about how to deal with it. I am caring him at home with help of Hospice Care. Every week or two, he showed new symptom. I have read so many articles and blogs about MSA and these articles make me very worry. I do not want my husband to suffer for a long time. What am I expecting from now on and how long?

Hello it sounds like you've read up a lot already, and got worried. The range of symptoms are different with each person, so if abductor paralysis is not an issue for your husband currently, I wouldn't focus on it for now. In the UK, speech therapists are the professionals that give detailed advice about the throat muscles. They don't seem to get involved unless the person is having trouble coughing when eating, or has sleep apnoea/breathing issues. My dad (msa-p) lost almost all his ability to speak for the last year or two of his life. But he had a strong swallowing ability until close to the end, and no general issues with breathing or sleep apnoea. It will be different for others. Other people on the forum have said more about CPAP machines etc on previous posts.

I wonder if it would help you to speak with a support group from the MSA coalition, as you're in America. Here is the contact page:multiplesystematrophy.org/m...

Uncertainty about how long someone has left can be one of the hardest things to deal with. Just take things a week at a time and try and get some relaxation when you can.

Thank you for your advice. I will contact support group you mentioned. My husband Richard has no pain up to now. That is really relief. Recently his snoring getting louder. Sound like Jet plane is flying through a tunnel like noise. I worry when his snoring stops and get quiet. Worry about if he is breathing or not. These days he coughs, try to spit mucus out. But not much comes out. Hospice care prescribed PANTOPRAZOLE for swallowing and cough problem. I hope this help his symptoms.
