My husband has MSA and was diagnosed 2 years ago. I was just wondering if anyone has has really low blood pressure eg 50/35 after eating or standing? Trying to work out if its worth him carring on with his current steroid based medication as it doesn't seem to be working. Thank you. Sharon

Hi Sharon. Those are very low BP readings, but the times that you describe it happening would be typical times for it to drop. My husband did have some periods when he would have drops but nothing as dramatic as that. He didn’t have any treatment targeted at the BP but he was on steroids for a skin condition which I felt helped in other ways too. I wouldn’t be stopping the steroid based treatment unless there was something else to move onto as there might be some Small amount of positive effect. I am sure that others will have some advice about treatments that have worked. I hope that you get some more effective treatment.

My husband is currently taking Midodrine 7.5mg three times a day to help with very low bp. Initially our gp would not prescribe it as it raises bp but following tests by the Autonomic consultant she agreed. It has really helped and is keeping him on an even keel. He has to take it 30 minutes before getting out of bed and 30 minutes before eating. Prior to that we were trying to raise his bp through compression socks and caffeinated drinks. It might help if you could get him referred to an Autonomic consultant for tests. Your gp should be able to help with this. The MSA Trust website has information and tips with how to deal with low bp too. Hope our experience helps in some way.
Hello there
Sorry not to respond earlier however only just have something to say of relevance. Jackie has postural hypertension and has just signed up to some trials of a drug targeted to those with MSA to manage the hypertension. No doubt we will have something to say once further on but if you are interested in the trial details then send a message to me.
Take care, Ian
my mum is also taking Midodrine & we are having to deal with very high BP but this is the compromise for controlling the very low spells, we've been advised by her consultant not to stop it as it's likely that she will struggle to even stand and there's such a high risk of falls with low BP (something that is already a big problem and we're desperate to keep her out of hospital)
I too have been struggling with Postural hypotension when sitting my bp can range from 81/66 to 119/79 and when standing it can be from 53/34 to 91/64. gp started me on 2.5mg Midodrine but I am now on the max dose of 10mg Midodrine.
How did you find out about the drug trial for posteral hypotension? No one has mentioned this during any consultations Peter has had?? Thanks Sharon
