Hi, do you have any medications, other than what you are trying for migraine? I got Clopidogrel (antiplatelet medicin) and propranolol was good for me. All migraine just gone.

You need to see your GP and have some bloods done, in case this is something other than a migraine!

The visual migraines I experienced as a result of a brain surgery respond well to a CGRP inhibitor. I have no idea whether this would be appropriate for your migraine issue. Suggest you consult with a migraine specialist to get the most accurate diagnosis and best review of tour options.

My GP prescribed propranolol, it worked a treat for me.

I had stopped taking aspirin due to gastro issues, and The visual migraines returned. I now take clopidogrel 3 times a week (recommended by Guys) and rarely get them now. They are not nice hey! I had never experienced migraines before, and whilst I didn’t get intense headaches, the ‘flashing’ and ‘auras’ were tricky to manage. I hope you find a solution

hi I suffer with migraines I’ve been under a stroke specialist who took me off Bisoprolol and put me on propanol and sumatriptan

At present I’m also under a cardiologist who said the propanol slows the heart rate I’ve just had a holter on for two weeks just waiting on his report

What does your doctor say? Are the headaches at the back of your head? I had that and it was high blood pressure. Check your blood pressure and get a doctors appointment. I was on 2.5Mg Ramipril and I have been increased to 5Mg. My blood pressure is still high and my Iron levels are high. I have a telephone appointment on Tuesday to get the results of the blood test.

Bearing in mind we are all different, but for me, my severe headaches and visual symptoms that I was having before diagnosis of ET ( and one of the symptoms that made me visit the gp) turned out to be vitamin b12 deficiency and went very quickly, never to return, when I corrected this problem. But of course headaches can be due to a wide variety of things and shouldn’t be ignored.

But just in case you haven’t had your vits checked, might be worth it.

Hope you find the answer soon.

See your GP about this.

I began to get visual disturbance migraines over ten years ago. No headache as such, just a big black space in the centre of my field of vision and a flashing light broken mirror effect around the edges. Unable to do anything while it was happening. I was prescribed Maxalt Melt, a thin soluble tablet of lyophilisate rizatriptan. Pop one in the mouth when it starts, and the migraine fades. You don't feel grand afterwards, but it beats the migraine and you can function.

Funnily enough, my last migraine occurred within two months of starting hydroxycarbamide for ET. None since. That makes me think that maybe my platelet levels were helping to cause the migraines. It could be coincidence. I'll never know.

Anyway, you have my sympathy with your migraines. Please see your GP as soon as you can to get some help.

Morning Daisy I am totally with Hound on this one my visual disturbances went once put on Clopidogrel .. neurologist still said in her view just migraines even after my diagnosis of ET. But I have not had them since . Occasional blurring of vision or feel too tired to read but none of the debilitating visual loss pixilated vision which became painful and closing eyes didn’t stop it .. the frequency was increasing as platelets I now know were rising . And so was my blood pressure it would seem .

So I am mighty relieved to be on Clopidogrel .

I haven’t had one in 2 years thank goodness, but I have even had one after getting too hot. Make sure you try to cut back on stress, drink enough water and get some rest. I had these before I had any of my current illness, but was worse when my labs were bananas. Yoga or a massage may help. I am just thinking of relaxation tips. I am wound up tight all the time! I really need to take some of my own advice too!😆

Same as some others here for me - aspirin, later swapped to clopidogrel, were prescribed to me and I’ve not had an aura for the 15 months since (although still get headaches).

Hello Daisy,

I’m so sorry you are feeling dreadful. I had severe visual disturbances and just like Swede’s reply,

I have come off daily aspirin and am now taking Clopidogrel. I have had the occasional one when light has triggered it, but much less now. I hope you find a solution.

Hugs and prayers

If it is any help, I experienced the same but after a few week on Hydroxyurea it stopped. After about 5 years i started to get it again. A few consecutive blood test showed my platelets were rising again so i had to increase the Hydroxyurea dosage. And the symptoms went away.

Just adding to your confusion perhaps, but I have ET take hydroxycarbamide and get optical migraine disturbances (without headaches) from time to time. Apparently this is a recognised occasional symptom of Atrial Fibrillation (that I also have)......

Life and diagnosis would be so much simpler if we could have one 'condition' at a time!!

hi Daisy Duke.

I had migraines with visual disturbances with flashing lights that got bigger and bigger and then moved out to the left of my visual field. This was not in my eyes this was being caused with something in the brain. Once I got my ET stabilised and was on the autoimmune Paleo diet for a couple of years all the visual disturbances stopped completely and the migraines that would accompany them. I have had two headaches and seven years. I attribute this to the diet than the medication. I lost a lot of weight and cleaned out my body from toxins by eating as much organic as possible and stabilising my vitamin D, vitamin Bs, magnesium and so on. I also drink 3 L a day in comparison to the one to 1 - 1/2 a day before.

I think it’s important as Hunter said to go to a doctor and get the thing cleared if it’s really migraines or if it’s something else. Always check with the doctor first it is best to due process of elimination. in my case talk and were playing also a very big roll including all my 35 silver fillings were removed more than 4 years ago. I did go through two years of hell doing that with massive brain fog and weakness. I was detoxing the mercury the whole time and now I’m free that. Because of my thyroid is also 60% better which means my Hashimoto has gone down. and many other autoimmune problems like eczema, bloating et cetera
