Hi. I wonder if anyone has used milk thistle supplements at all please. I have a non alcohol mild fatty liver, lucky me, alongside ET Jak2 positive. Thanks. X

I am using a milk thistle extract to manage the elevation in LFTs caused by the Besremi. This is used in integrative oncology to support liver function when undergoing treatment. The specific supplement and dose I am using was prescribed by my Integrative Medicine doctor. I went from 3X upper Limit of Normal to normal levels. The doc prescribed Silymarin 500mg qd, manufactured by Pure Encapsulations.

Note that anything that is biologically active enough to help you can also hurt you and interact with things. It is important to consult a medical professional about the use of complementary health interventions who is trained in their use. Many doctors are unfamiliar with the use of these interventions as it is outside of their training and scope of practice. I consult with an Integrative/Functional medicine doctor about the use of supplements for this reason. These doctors can also recommend reliable sources for the supplements. Supplements are poorly regulated and some are worthless.

Wishing you success moving forward.

Thanks for that reply. I am doing my usual bloods next week and have an appointment with the haematology doctor the week after. I can ask then.

When I spoke to my MPN doc about about using the milk thistle extract, she was not familiar with its use. She seemed interested in my experience as so many patients experience elevations in LFTs on the IFNs. If the hematologist is not familiar with the use of this supplement, suggest you consult an Integrative or Functional medicine doctor for the best guidance.

Hi, I believe I recently had a very strange reaction to taking a supplement (not milk thistle but collagen for my thinning hair, I am on 3 hydrea a day) and as others have mentioned, if you think it can help it could possibly hurt too. I wondered after a little while of taking it I felt a bit dizzy but I and my haemo really could not see how it would affect my platelets. But my platelets skyrocketed so I stopped taking it and my next blood work, a month a later was back to my normal. So as long as you are getting regular bloods done I am sure you can try and manage it with your dr's approval, of course.
