hello

we Are on holiday just now in Florida. Today my husband experienced vertigo it started off when he was sitting in the back of the car(he does feel sicky before Et diagnosis if he sits in back). I’m worried incase it’s serious. We have been doing the parks and not sure it’s just all catching up now. Any advice ? Thanks

It could be a blood pressure drop. Might be worth trying something salty to eat and more water.

hi Green1988, so sorry to hear that your husband has vertigo, not very nice for him. If it continues maybe get some advice from a doctor, for advice on ways to combat this. Does he ever get dizzy spells at all, as dizziness is one of the symptoms experienced by people with ET, so if this is something new then definitely worth checking with a doctor and then speak to his haematologist and GP when he gets back from holiday. Best wishes, Maz

If the vertigo is new or getting worse then it is an emergent condition that should be addressed by his care team. It could be related to the ET or caused by something else. It is certainly worth a call to the hematologist treating the ET. It may also be a good idea to check into an Urgent Care office just to check out other potential causes of the problem. While it is unlikely the docs at Urgent Care will be familiar with MPNs, they should be able to check out other potential causes of the vertigo.

Note that dehydration can cause dizziness. Given that you are in Florida and he has ET, good hydration is particularly important. The doc at Urgent Care would be able to tell if hydration is part of the issue.

Hope he gets this sorted and you all enjoy your vacation.

Hi hunter thanks for your reply. He hasn’t had dizziness before so I’m hoping this is a one off. I will message his Mpn nurse on Monday. Yes it has definitely been hot here and we have been doing the parks so maybe it’s all catching up now especially the fatigue.

I had vertigoattack when first diagnosed with ET. I did follow up with ENT specialist and he could find nothing wrong, Good news is it had not happened again.

I totally agree with Hunter. The Florida heat certainly requires more hydration. I live at the jersey shore and learned the hard way that inadequate hydration caused my lightheadedness. Before I walk my dog in the morning I drink 18 ounces of water with Propel powder mixed in for electrolytes. Then another 40-50 ounces throughout the day. This has largely solved the problem. I'm 76 with pv 3 years and on hydroxyurea for 2 plus.

Still worth checking out but I'm betting he needs to hydrate. Good luck

Thanks saltmarsh for your reply. I’m making sure he drinks he definitely hasn’t been drinking as much as he should.

That will absolutely do it. I thought I was drinking enough but I wasn't. Good luck. Hope you can enjoy the rest of your vacation

Dehydration from the heat possibly?

I live in a hilly place and the roads to and fro are an hour or more of curves. Half of us can't tolerate the back seat. We request the front seat because we need to track out movement with our eyes. Many causes of vertigo. You mentioned amusement parks. Crystals displaced within the inner ear from rides? Youtube maneuver that can help. Besides circulation or infection, consider inner ear. It is debilitating. Good luck.
