Anyone out there who knows me (few probably on this website! ) knows that over the years I ve banged on at a few forums about the food we eat.
I m not going to do that now - simply, if you buy one book this week whether paper, kindle or audio - please make it “ultra processed people by Chris Van Tulleken. “
Superbly written.
All I can say is listen and learn.
There is of course a reason why, over the last eight years, the incidence of blood cancer patients at The Christie has risen from 1000 a month to 2,500 a month - as seen on a graph on my haematologist’s phone.
I ve long said that the rise in so many cancers is hugely due to what we eat, drink, breathe in and absorb.
An unmissable read. Louise

I think you know, it’s more about educating our children from an early age re what’s good for us, and what is true nutrition, and about educating current parents and adults how to cook. I was behind ( an obese) lady in Tesco yesterday. She had 6 cheap pizzas, 3 cheap white loaves, crisps, packets galore of cheap biscuits…… I know folk are hard up but it’s all about eating less of the right stuff!
I recently switched back to white bread, after putting up with horric acne on my face, it has cleared up, the wholemeal bread was the last thing l thought could be the cause... Nothing cheap about any food stuffs. Schools could do a lot more at an earlier age on good nutrition.
I agree! I'm always reluctant to tell people that they really "should" read a particular book but this one is so important. Although I, like many of us, was already aware of how unhealthy processed foods are, this book clarifies and confirms it in detail. It is fascinating and shocking. The tragedy is that ultra processed food is cheap and all too easily available to people struggling with the cost of living. It has also been pushed onto poorer countries.
thanks for posting this. Although I do my best to avoid processed food I sometimes fall victim to its allure. My partner and I don’t drink alcohol. We don’t go out very much and my priority for spending is fresh, unprocessed food. I’m now undergoing chemotherapy to try and defeat the myelofibrosis and myelodysplasia so there seems little point in eating loads of harmful food additives at the same time
You haven’t been around for a while. How are you doing? - well, I hope
The food industry are all about profit, manufactures never dropped the costs of goods after replacing sugar with much cheaper sweeteners, all of which may be carsagenic sugar may make me fat. Just sweeted back to sugar in my tea. Avoiding sweeteners is frighteningly difficult.
I love Van Tulleken's work and advocacy around the need to avoid UHP food. It's important we also follow his lead in not laying blame at the door of those who choose UHP food because of poverty or ignorance or being time poor. I think we have to stick it the policy makers and the food manufacturers.
You are so very correct. As a species, we pretty much suck and the rest of the earth's inhabitants won't be sorry to see us gone. It's all about the money and we are beginning to reap the rewards of that philosophy.
As Pogo said, "We have met the enemy and they is us."
I totally agree. My MF is certainly due to the effects of Benzene in petroleum products. But few people will accept that these artificial ingredients in food and cosmetics, have such a negative result to our health. Look for Benz...... in the list of ingredients, even in so called Organic products. I saw a report from the U S A that an expert had stated that all MPNs are due to environmental causes, but the chemical companies make so much money out of them, they will never admit there is a problem. It may be too late for us oldies, but the effect they will have on children is very scary.
