Does Vit K2 elevate platelets

Hello everyone I have ET and on hydroxycarbemide 9 tablets a week. My platelets are down to 415 and I take Vit D3 4000 iu per day. I’ve heard that Vit K2 should be taken alongside VitD3. Is it ok to take Vit K2 or will it increase my platelets. Has anyone received advice from a MPN specialist as Im not under one as yet. Thank you Irene

I havnt had a problem with the vit k that's added to d I take BUT we are all different. So it's best to speak with someone maybe if you can afford it a functional / integrative practitioner , while you are waiting for MPN specialist

Hi Irene,You ask a question that many of us would love an answer to - what is the relationship or effect of supplements/food and our MPN condition and medication. I have PV since 2005 so have had time to explore this. My GP can't engage with the question as it is not pharmaceutical based. I have asked MPN specialists over the years. I always have my list to hand. I only get vague, don't know answers and no offer to have it resolved. Hunter goes to a functional / integrative practitioner, as Mostew mentions, so I investigated this. There don't appear to be many in the UK. I am not sure of the location of the one I found but the cost put me off. £1700 up front. This included initial 2 hour consultation and some follow up sessions. No blood tests included! I imagine these would cost a lot of money. So I am no wiser.

I need a PCR test for travel in December and I noticed the company who does these tests offer other blood tests. I am thinking of seeing if they do vitamin or mineral tests. The results, if they do them, would just show levels but that might be a start.

I take K2 for bone health with Vit D. Have done so for years. My HTC level is steady on Pegasys. But who knows what the difference is between food intake and supplements. Let us know if you can find the answer. Best of luck Mairead

Thank you for your reply and that’s an interesting idea about getting a blood test to check your bits and mineral levels . Can I ask you how much daily Vit D3 and K2 you take. I was hoping that someone on this forum under say Prof Harrison had been given specific advice te taking K2 with Vit D3. Here’s hoping. Kind regards Irene

Hi Irene,

I take about 2000 iu of Vitamin D3. I have just changed over to the liquid one so I am less precise about that. K2 I take 120 ug. When I started I worked out the conversion from ug and iu to mg and knew what I was taking. But I have lost my formula.

I checked the PCR testing place. They only do tests for Vit D and B12. Either £45 or £65 each. You can get these done by the GP if you need them.

I think you can find information on line about the possible K2 content in food but it cannot be precise due to too many variables. In the distant past my sister was on Warfarin and it was recommended that she didn't eat too much spinach. If you find out more information on K2 and food I would be pleased to know.

Good luck in your endeavours.

I also take k2 and my hematologist says it's okay to take it. I have ET and osteoporosis so I take 2000 IU of vitamin D.

That’s good to hear. May I ask how much K2 you take per day and have your platelets remained stable? Kind regards

Regarding any supplements I recommend you always ask advice from your consultant.

Yes I will do but he’s not a MPN specialist. He’s very good but doesn’t seem very knowledgeable about supplements. Kind regards Irene
