PV and fainting

hi all

Hope you are taking care in this heat.

I had a fainting episode at work today and wondered if there’s anything PV related.

I’m aware it’s ridiculously hot and wondered if PV can impacts our capacity to manage heat ?

I have been on aspirin and venesections last 6 years (annually for most after the initial flurry and more recently 3 monthly as my blood counts seems to be shifting). Then became anaemic so prescribed small 2 week does of iron 3 months ago)

Basically I’m saying I was fine this morning usual routine and due to heat took cold shower drive to work and was sitting after having breakfast 30 mins previous and then felt nausea dizzy and then collapsed. I wasn’t responding initially but woke within a minute.

not usually a fainter. Any thoughts ?

thank you

Sanga

You must keep cool always,I have had P V nearly 12 yrs,was advised immediately ,keep out of sun or any heat.I have always been cautious but this last dreadful heat we have had in S W France has been horrendous for everyone.Imade the mistake of trying to finish a sculpture,( all fans on in studio) suddenly I was tired & very hot, then passed out.I was quickly into Urgence at nearest hospital( not my normal blood one) but care was great, tested heart ,lungs, oxygen levels ,blood tests. It was just the heat that was the cause of my malaise.Have since had brain scan ,just in case of a bleed.I take Jakavi & there is a risk that can happen. My brain was good .Have spent more than a week in my bedroom with air con, cannot go outside

We have been high 30 s - to 40 s,fires breaking out in nearby forests, very scary. So yes I am sure the heat caused your faint. You must take care ,it is dangerous most people have no idea how heat can kill .Are you U K ? If so be very careful,we are used to our normal heat in Sothern Fr.but this has been exceptional& I think you are about to have similar.Take care. Sally

Thanks Inca. I’m in uk. Born and brought up in a hot country so really know how to take care. Your response is helpful and assume as I came round there’s no need for me to get checked ?

Surprisingly, I’ve not been told to stay out of heat, so thought it was specifically just for those on meds. For obvious reasons

I had been sitting still in my office for 15 mins which is cooled by fans and open windows talking. Had lots of water so hydrated and eaten. Feels strange.

However I do hear you and will take more care.

I’ve not suffered from heat other than I note get hotter than I did before PV. I’m such a sun worshipper (very carefully re shade and spf) I’d hate for this to be taken away.

Does anyone know why this is the case with PV or all MPNs ?

Many thanks

Hi Sanga,Certainly on Hydrea which I had when first diagnosed, there is a risk of skin cancer....I had several carcinoma s with that, just awful. Not a sunbather but my life in U K was outdoors we bred competition horses.

Since living in Fr I have taken great care of my fair skin /blonde /blue eyes but still managed several skin problems. Just recently had a carcinoma on my left eyelid, never outside without sun glasses. My excellent surgeon told me that we M P Ners are at great risk full stop.So make sure you are covered in the sun.Believe me skin cancer on your face is devastating,

There are others on the site who have the same awful carcinoma & other skin cancers. So take care, maybe abandon sun bathing, just buy a good fake tan ...I do ,helps me feel a bit healthier!! My daughter tells me that a sun tan is not fashionable now.....she lives in U K,lguess that’s why all the good cosmetic companies are advertising their ‘sun kissed’look ,they are here certainly,as you will know having lived in a hot country, shutters closed & in the house on hot days, yes heat is more noticeable with P V & so is the cold,it’s a rotten disease to cope with.Best to you ,Sally

I know a number of people who struggle in the heat. Fainting can happen for all kinds of reasons including low blood pressure or anaemia. Hopefully your experience will be a one off, but worth mentioning to your doctor.

Thanks for your reply. Have spoken to consultant and GO who both want me to undergo some tests as not all is adding up.

Will be taking greater care in the heat

My darling hubby has gone out and bought an air cooler for my office as well as fans.

Take care one and all.
