Underfloor heating

flamboyant_hawking profile image

We are planning a house renovation, and I thought it would be handy to have the underfloor heating throughout. There are articles online stating that is not advisable if there's a risk of developing blood clots. The architects think that providing the size of the area the temperature won't need to be particularly high to keep the room warm. I was wondering if anyone here has a first-hand experience or more info on the topic.

Hi, I have 50 years experience of underfloor heating but I have never heard this before. To me it sounds strange so I wonder where that really comes from. Why would underfloor heating cause blood clots I wonder. The heating is more pleasant and less dry as radiator heated houses usually are. It can be either water or electric powered so it depends on what you prefer and the house. We have solarcell roof as well so it is less expensive. We even have underfloor heating in our motorhome. Hope it all goes well!

I know nothing of this, but this report comes up:

pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/191...

<<A warm floor can induce high blood perfusion in the feet and consequently improve an occupant's health by treating many vascular-related disorders.>>

Do you have the reports on the risk?

Note that underfloor heat does not make the floor hot, rather just warm, which is different from a regular heater that can get quite hot in its small area.

Never heard of this before! I’ve lived with underfloor heating in my kitchen and bathroom for the past twenty years. Love it. Also love a radiator. Can’t dry your undies on the floor. 🤣

Interesting - we have underfloor heating in key rooms throughout the house (and also had in our previous house) - never heard of this. Do very much appreciate the warm (not hot) floors in the winter/rainy season (especially bathrooms)...

We have underfloor heating throughout our house and it gives a very even pleasant temperature. I have never had any problem with it. I’m sure you’ll love it

I had never hear of this issue, so I had to look it up. Here is what I found.

Is underfloor heating unhealthy?

Quite the contrary! Underfloor heating has come a long way since its introduction in the 1960s!

At the time, it operated with water heated to very high temperatures, between 50 and 70 °C (like radiators). Notably because the pipes were too far apart, and homes were very poorly insulated. The result : the overheating of the floor above 30 °C caused unpleasant sensations of heavy legs. Bad for blood circulation, it was even suspected that the overheating of the ground was promoting venous insufficiency, varicose veins and thrombosis.

I would not hesitate to install a modern underfloor heating system. I hope you enjoy the new system.

Well I have to say we have a tiled conservatory floor with such hot underfloor heating that we have to wear slippers. The dog lasts about 5 minutes before sloping off to find a cool spot! Sounds a bit odd to me!!!

Terrified as I am (and the toll a chronic and rare illness has on mental health is a topic per se), I searched for underfloor heating and blood clots and found the claims that it slows down circulation and thus increases the risk. Thanks to all of you for putting my mind at ease - I was hoping for the answers like this, especially from a professional such as Swede .

Underfloor heating, here I come. :-)

Make sure to have individual controls for each room.

I've under floor heating in my kitchen and bathroom and have never had any problems . The heating is on mainly in the winter and just warm enough to take the chill off marble tiles or it's off in the summer.

The question to ask yourself is, how long will you be in a particular underfloor heated room to cause any adverse problems? My guess is not long!

I've never heard of such blood clots caused by underfloor heating. There's always something that makes us scared. I say, Go for it and enjoy!

As we plan to have the underfloor heating throughout the house, I'd say I'll be in a floor-heated room most of the time, even more so if I continue to WFH.

I also like to keep the temperature at 22-23, so I'm not really sure how warm the floor will need to be in order to achieve that.

I have the WarmUp 4IE (wireless) system which allows you to control your underfloor heating as you would your normal heating. So I set mine for kitchen and bathroom at times when I know we are likely to be in that room. The temperature is higher in the winter up to 28degrees and in the summer around 22degrees or off altogether. This system also has an auto feature which works, based on the temperature outside (smart controller). I never remember to set this...LOL! Also, I have central heating so my underfloor heating doesn't need to be too high, just to be comfortable.

If this is going to be your main source of heating, you may have to experiment to see what is comfortable for your family. I think each underfloor heating system has their minimum and maximum operating temperature . Hope this helps!

All the best!
