Bone marrow biopsy and driving

Hi all. I’ve got my first ever bone marrow biopsy on Monday. Turns out to be terrible timing and I’m going to be alone the day of and the days after. My question is, is it possible to drive after? I have an automatic so is if I got it in my left side would i be ok to drive? I figure I won’t need that leg as long as I have my right for the pedals. Or am I’m going to be in too much pain?

I drove (manual gear shift) before and after and didn’t have anyone with me or staying with me. I wasn’t offered a sedative and didn’t ask for any otherwise I couldn’t have driven.

I felt bruised and a bit sore in the bmb area when the local anaesthetic wore off but nothing unmanageable and it didn’t stop me driving to work next morning.

Hope that helps. It’s just my bmb experience and maybe it was different for others.

I drove my automatic before and after bmb and wasn’t advised to the contrary.

Hi there.

I had a BMB in march, and the thought of it was worse than the procedure.

You feel a bit bruised once anaesthetic wears off, you should be fine driving especially an automatic.

Hi. I was able to drive and return to normal activities immediately after my bmb - I felt a bit bruised, but that soon went. I think the thought of it is worse than the aftermath! Good luck, I’m sure you’ll be fine.

Hi. In theory perfectly possible. Wouldn’t want to have a long or stressful drive home. Suggest park car near so you don’t have a big post procedure trek (lesson learnt) and maybe dose up on some analgesics for when anaesthetic wears off? Get into the car seat gently (another lesson learnt!!!). Found that being a bit more careful, not (unintentionally) bashing the injection site, and taking it easy for 24 / 48 hours made for a much speedier recovery second time around! Good luck!

Hi when I had my BMB it took 2 and a half hours as I had hard bones I wouldn't have been able to drive after just be aware you don't want to put yourself in a position where you have to drive and really don't feel up to it x

I've had two biopsies, a little bit sore afterwards, able to drive home 15 miles, without any problem. The thought of it is worse than the actual.

I had my BMB in right side and found it very painful to drive when moving my leg for the pedals in automatic car. I imagine having it on the left side would make a big difference. Looking back I had the option to pass the driving over to my partner so I might have opted out sooner than if I had had to drive. Good luck

You should be able to drive afterwards especially if you can get home before the local anaesthetic wears off. Make sure you have Paracetamol ready for when it does. I have had five BMBs and the pain afterwards has been a little worse each time.

It should be fine, you don't really move your hip when driving,. The question reminds me of years ago when I went to the dentist's and had injections to num the pain while he removed a tooth, after he'd finished I said is it ok to drive ? And he replied yes as long as you don't steer with your teeth 🤗

It depends on the marrow itself, mine is horrible experience since its dry due to primary myelofibrosis

Hi, lots of people say it’s not as bad as they thought and that they were fine straight after however, I had a hideous time during and after and took a long time to recover. I really hope this isn’t the case for you! I have Fibromyalgia, so the doctors said that’s why I had such an ordeal. Good luck with it all.🍀
