Best immunity

:those who’ve had Covid and not the vaccine do have a degree of immunity, a degree of immunity which is probably better than those who’ve only just had the vaccine. That said, you’re more likely to catch Covid from a vaccinated person who has not had Covid than from a person who has had Covid, but not the vaccine.

Could I have your opinion on the above statement please. Thank you

Comment from Maz: please see below replies from Prof Harrison to this statement.

It's nonsense, and dangerous nonsense. You can't catch Covid from someone who has been vaccinated but has never had the disease.

Didn’t it mean had as in past ?

You can catch Covid from a vaccinated person. There are breakthrough cases, primarily due to Delta’s high viral load (studies put it at 1260x more). It’s why the scientists realized herd immunity would be difficult - because Delta does spread among the vaccinated. This is at much lower rates, however, than if not vaccinated AND hospitalizations and deaths are dramatically reduced. So, obv, vaccination is best.

Read what it says. "you’re more likely to catch Covid from a vaccinated person who has not had Covid". This is a common antivax idea, that being vaccinated means you become infectious.

I did read the statement, exactly as stated. Technically, through the most recent studies, it's correct. You are, if following the most recent study which was done through public health data in Israel, more likely to catch COVID from a vaccinated person who hasn't had it than from someone unvaccinated who did have it. It's what the data is showing. But, it doesn't account for all the things I note above. And it's one recent study, more to be seen. The reason I expounded on that above is because it's being used by the anti vaxx movement to provide clarity on how to break it down. But, I work for scientists and do try to be accurate in my statements.

Evidence that you can catch Covid from someone who has never been infected but has been vaccinated? The reports I've seen from Israel are about so-called "breakthrough" cases where someone who is vaccinated becomes infected and therefore infectious. That's not what the original poster was describing.

There have been a number of studies on this you can find. The most recent, and often quoted (and a well done study) was out of Israel. It did, indeed, find that those who had COVID were better protected than vaccination alone. Those who have had both are best protected of all. HOWEVER, as with any “statement” that doesn’t include the whole story. The researchers made a point of noting that the consequences of not being vaccinated put you at risk for the not insignificant proportion of people that get COVID and experience long term consequences to their brain, lungs, others areas. At this point there is an emerging scientific picture of who might be affected more strongly and it goes across all demographics. It will be a bit of time before we have diagnostics to tell if you might have a more serious reaction (and to be clear, they now know you can have asymptomatic or mild COVID and still experience changes to your body and brain). It’s like a wildfire that goes through your systems. Vaccination lowers the impact of the virus so even if you get it, you are far less likely to end up with long lasting consequences (or hospitalization or death). If you do get a breakthrough case, you may not know it or symptoms are mild. And your body can heal or create work around me any issues happening inside. When you consider other recent research out of several major research bodies including Stanford University among other esteemed labs, COVID shrinks areas of gray matter in the brain. It has a massive impact on our bodies - which is why I wear a mask even in the maskless London scene. I don’t need this virus. One article among MANY. google.com/amp/s/api.nation...

Ps. I haven’t seen anyplace that states who you’re more likely to catch it from. It’s a logical leap *perhaps* just based on the mathematics of it all, but again may miss the bigger picture.

hi Cokopops, I have asked Prof Harrison about this statement and she has said as per below:

That said, you’re more likely to catch Covid from a vaccinated person who has not had Covid than from a person who has had Covid, but not the vaccine - her reply to this is: no data either way.. Nothing to substantiate this comment.

It's nonsense, and dangerous nonsense. You can't catch Covid from someone who has been vaccinated but has never had the disease - her reply to this is: This is also I am afraid wrong.

Thank you Maz. I don’t understand those that are so oppose to the vaccine…Same person says that there was never a pandemic…I despair and will not enter in anymore discussion with such warped thinking. Thanks for your reply

This relates to "Hybrid Immunity"which is potentiality the very best protection. You can search that term.

"So-called hybrid immunity — that is, natural immunity from an infection combined with the immunity provided by the vaccine — appears to result in stronger protection than just infection or vaccination alone."

See a preprint as an example:

biorxiv.org/content/10.1101...

If you've been infected, you have a special advantage when getting the vax. It's a shame when I hear someone say I've already had it so don't need the vax. In fact prior infection is a great opportunity to likely get the highest level of protection against variants etc if you also get the vax .

I had Covid early Mar 2020 and Long covid also. It's quite a mix with a new Dx of MPN. I just got vax #3.
