Zink and rising platelets

Hi , I wrote a post three month ago when my platelets had risen for the first time in 2 years , I spent days wondering what may have been the causes, I wondered what if anything I might have done that could have influenced a rise , the only thing I could think of was that I started taking a zink supplement to support my immune system with this Covid , so after a bi of research online I discovered that they may be the culprit, I stopped taking them immediately, just had my blood results and they have dropped the 30 points they had raised , so I’m assuming that they was the cause , of course I don’t know for sure but I thought it was worth sharing my experience .

Hi, that is interesting to read and a bit worrying as I had also started taking a Vit C and Zn supplement and have only recently been diagnosed albeit my last test was 7 weeks ago. I’d probably best stop taking it and try and get another blood test . Thanks for sharing.

Yes I’d stop , I was taking vit c with added zink and also a zink tablet , my platelets has never risen that much so I had to assume that’s what it was ,

I have taken zinc plus other supplements regularly, for years. Personally I haven’t seen any effect on blood counts. Actually with my last two CBC my platelets had dropped by nearly 300. ( no that’s not a typo 😁) I am not on any meds except occasional aspirin . (ET Jak2+)

thanks for reply , that’s a big drop , I could do with that , well it makes me wonder now , guess we never really know for sure what causes these changes , I would be interested to know if you have any ideas about what may have caused your reduction, and to what levels they are now .

Hi,

yes i think many of are wondering what we can do to help.

To be honest, the only thing i worked on between the two appts was reducing my stress levels. (Levels went from 1685 to 1410.) Sadly, seeing my haem gives me the most stress, as i think he is useless. Have tried changing Doctors, but haven't succeeded yet.

Managed to get a second opinion from an MPN expert who completely agreed with me, so that was encouraging, but she won't take me on her patient list, so a bit annoying.

Over the past 5years, i have tried lots of dietary stuff, supplements etc. Of course some supplements clearly made me feel better, especially B12. That was hugely significant for me and i continue with that one. BUT- they didn't change my blood counts one bit.

Still searching for that one thing that will make a difference...

Wish me luck !
