Letters

I’m really curious about something. I’m in the U. S. I read all the time about letters people from the U. K. are getting. What are these? Is that only there? I’ve never gotten one from anybody. Thanks....just being nosy. 🤪

Letters telling people to shield from covid because they are classed as extremely clinically vulnerable.

hi Scrollernut, this is a scheme which was put in place last March when the UK government put the country into lockdown because of COVID, letters were sent to people living in England with certain medical conditions advising them to follow specific guidelines to keep them safe from COVID, as they were classed as 'clinically extremely vulnerable'. Many people with MPNs received these letters. And once again as we went into the current lockdown, letters were being sent out.

I hope all is well with you. Best wishes, Maz

Thanks. Just curious. Hmmmm wonder why U. S. doesn’t. Is it helpful?

Not helpful for me as I don’t feel extremely vulnerable

. But useful for giving to employers to show u need to work from home or get certain support from government

Hi: I'm in the US as well - California. I'm thinking that given how tight resources have been and and how little direction was given at the federal level to fighting the virus, letters informing people they were critically vulnerable -- if even considered -- probably didn't have a high enough priority. But that's just pure speculation :) Kim

Kim I agree totally. I’m in Illinois. Our governor, I really believe, had tried to do his best with lockdowns,masks.. as well as mayors but they’re getting such negative feedback and people are ignoring the warnings. I’ve had COVID. It is not a hoax as I was told. So frustrating!! I honestly doubt if any letters would even be effective. I was just curious about the letters. Stay safe ♥️♥️

Thanks. Sorry to hear you got sick. Definitely serious stuff and hope you're all better. By the way -- where in Illinois? I grew up in the northern suburbs, went to U of I, worked in the city. That was all long ago, but I'm still very nostalgic for the midwest.

Hipa regulations would prevent the government from identifying anyone. It would have to be suggested by your primary care provider

Thanks. I was one of the more fortunate ones. One night in the hospital. That was back in September and still have breathing problems. I live in Bloomingdale. About 25 miles straight west of Chicago at end of Eisenhower and route 53.

Remember that the U.K. has a centralized health system. It would be impossible for the U.S. government to identify all the medically vulnerable given the diverse systems used by hospitals, doctors, insurance companies, etc.

Ahh. That’s right. I had forgotten about that. Thanks that makes total sense. We were in Scotland many years ago and I got very sick and went to the doctor. Exam and meds were free. He asked that we put money in his “poor” box which he then donated to the poor. I’ll never forget him. Stay safe. ♥️

I also live in the U.S. Getting an appointment for a vaccine is near impossible where I live. It's an insane, chaotic system. We have a British friend, who is waiting patiently for his turn, not stressing out, because he knows that he will get a letter with his appointment date 'when his turn comes'. Socialized medicine makes sense. Our American system makes everything much more stressful and more expensive too.
