Bone scan results

Hi, I have just had a phone call from Endocrinologist saying she thinks I should be on treatment for thinning bones. I’m ET JAK 2 positive. A bit worried about more medication on top of hydroxy, clopidogrel and amitriptyline. I’ve never been one for medication and it seems to be multiplying.

Hello Bield ...

I am Et Jak 2 positive ... you may be given vitamin D ... so it could be just a vitamin added to your list ...I take hydroxy vit D ..Clopidogrel ... but was taking many more tablets until recently ...was taking other medication for inflammation..that has improved,so stopped that one ..plant base diet has helped me so much .. so although we have Mpn there are still other ways of helping ourselves without endless medications ..hope this is of some help to you ..all the very best to you ... please have a look on our site .. you will find some great ideas ......Lainie x

Hi Bield , , I've had a recent bone density which wasn't encouraging despite taking Alendronic Acid (1 small tablet weekly) and daily calcium tabs (Evacal chewable - quite nice as they go) which is what your specialist might advise / prescribe. As a result of my scan I have been offered a 6 monthly subcutaneous injection of Denosumab which in some instances can help reverse the effects of Osteoporosis (not the compressed vertebrae! ) . But I must have any outstanding dental work done first as it can affect the jaw bone and teeth. I think it's worth the risk as I've never shirked a chance for improvement.

I doubt you would be offered this as a start point but I understand your concerns about taking too many drugs.

Hope you get sorted because you don't need me to tell you that your bone health is critical to your overall wellbeing.

Regards - Chris

Certainly understand your reluctance to add more meds. Perhaps adding Vit D and increasing dietary calcium will be enough to help. Since you listed the concern about multiple drug interactions, i ran an interaction check through ePocrates to see if anything flagged for the meds you listed + Fosamax (one of the common meds for osteoporosis). This is the only thing that flagged.

Additional Considerations

alendronate in Fosamax admin. alendronate at least 30min before other oral drugs; combo may decr. alendronate absorption, efficacy

You should of course run your concerns by ALL of the docs prescribing to you as well as your pharmacist. I always insist my docs factor in all of my meds/supplements, have the pharmacy check, and run my own interaction check. (Note: ePocrates has a free account you can create that lets you access the same interaction check that many doctors use).

Hope you find relief from the multiple issues ASAP.

I am also ET JAK 2 positive, started on Hydrea 500mg and Clopidogrel 75mg daily instead of aspirin which hurt my stomach too much. I have no problems on these medications. I also take D3 supplement daily and on an anti-inflammatory diet. Have been doing fine, also platelets maintain stable within normal range and Hydrea been reduced down to only 5 days weekly, hope will stay this way.I don't like having to take more medicine too, but sometimes can't be avoided when needed.

I know but I’m not to confident of drugs being prescribed. Often wonder would the prescriber be quick to take them

Amitriptyline is an antidepressant and Nerve pain medicationIt can treat depression. It works for the pain but it also causes weight gain.

I have found weight gain a problem, not much pain relief though.
