When to take HU night or day
Personal choice I guess but was advised originally to take at night - that way any side-effects (if any) can occur when asleep <bg>
I started it in the morning but changed to the evening/last thing at night. (However, have wondered if that explains the 'sore' palate I keep getting.) Sallie
I take my HU tablet early afternoon, usually after eating lunch. I take an aspirin after eating breakfast and a cholesterol tablet at bedtime. This strategy helps me to mitigate the possible side effects of taking medication all at once.
I take mine in the evening, like KevinJH mentioned if any side effects will happen whilst I'm asleep. When I first start taking HU I took in the morning, then changed to evening
I’ve been taking HU for ET 12 1/2 years now. After some trial and error, I started taking it in the evening because it made me more fatigued and out of it during the day if I took it in the morning. Now I take it in the morning because I’m on a different pill that’s even stronger because I progressed to myelofibrosis last year. I don’t like to take them all at once.
I forgot to say that the new pills I started last year I now take before I go to bed at night.
When I was on HU I used to space them throughout the day. I had very few side effects.
I take mine at night, just before I go to bed. It's just personal preference... It's part of my 'bedtime routine' Turn off TV - Take meds - Turn off lights - Clean teeth - Bed.
Doctor told me it didn’t matter. I started in the morning, but with my extremely variable schedule it didn’t work out to be consistent. Also, it seems that brushing my teeth right after I take it helps stop/slow mouth sores... and doing that before bedtime is just easier for me. I didn’t notice any differences on how I felt between taking it morning vs night.
Hello I take mine in the morning after breakfast and getting ready. I wasn’t advised when to take them. I have had no problems.
Hi I have to take 3 daily now. I tend to do this with every meal. Breakfast with orange (probably the wrong thing) but that is the first thing I have then at lunch as I start to eat and the same with dinner.
I get no symptoms so very lucky but now just wondering if the food absorbs it more easily?
I take mine after my evening meal with all my other meds. On the days I take 2 I take both at the same time as that’s what it says to do on the box.
Thank you everyone for your replies very helpful that s why I love this forum so helpful
In fact you can take it anytime if the day as your choice as long as try to take it same time everyday. Some prefer in the morning and some prefer at night.
I take mine every morning after light breakfast and it's fine to me. But if I want to change it at night for some reason I can, providing we try best to stick to the same routine.
I take hydroxyurea (HU?) at night. First, if it were to upset my stomach I’d likely sleep through, and second, I take a number of drugs for high blood pressure, diabetes, etc. in the am. I’ve gained weight on it, 14 lb over 5 mo before lock down and another 4 during lock down. I’m anemic, getting iron infusions. Hoping I will feel better with more energy to exercise soon.
I take mine at night by choice and not gaining weight.
I take my aspirin in the morning & HU at night. I have put on a weight since lockdown but have put that down to a lack of exercise & comfort eating being stuck in with shielding.
Hi Chel1, I started taking mine in the morning, but after still getting some nausea after 3 months on it, have been advised to take it at night instead. I haven't felt nausea since, and been taking it at night for over a week now. It seems that, whilst we all have our rare condition in common, how it and the medication affects us is very individual. The more we share, the more we learn, and can try out
Take it when it suits you best I think, then you can change it if needed, You may be one of the ones that have little or no side effects. In my case, I may still be getting nausea but sleeping through it now I guess, so if you do get this side effect, taking it at night can ease it, and that sounds like it is so for fatigue as well.
Good luck finding what fits for you!
My husband takes his at 6pm he's never had any side effects at all. He's now on ruxolitanib and same with that one 6pm no side effects .
Thank you again every one
