Do people continue treatment even they got mouth ulcers. Or do you stop for a month and restart again the next month. Or change treatment as it’s affect ur mouth. If you continued and how long you stayed on this treatment

Hi I’ve been on hydroxycarbamide 2000mg for almost 11 years had ET at beginning now it’s Myelofibrosis have suffered a lot with mouth ulcers some normal and some really painful Sometimes have had to get antibiotics as doc said I would not have got rid of them by myself a fortnight ago I got two one disappeared no problem the other one took 3 weeks I phoned doc but got a nurse I told her I’d had it for two weeks nurse wasn’t very nice told her I had tried everything mouth wash salt water coconut oil bicarbonate soda she told me to go to chemist for a better mouth wash Then she said she would give me a prescription it was Benzydamide. Brilliant stuff it cleared up in two days it numbs your mouth takes the pain away hope this helps Diana

You could try Difflam mouthwash. I get mine on prescription because the drugs are causing the ulcers. Good luck.

I got mouth ulcers when on hydroxyurea. The doc's office told me it was a sign of a compromised immune system - the mouth is a very germy place. I also developed a case of thrush, which required treatment with an anti-fungal (Nystatin). Have no idea whether your ulcers are bacterial, viral, fungal - or some mix of all of the above. Perhaps a consultation with another type of specialist would help to clarify the underlying type of infection is causing your ulcers. The use of any chemotherapy is always a balancing act. Chemo drugs are not entirely benign and risks/adverse effects have to be weighed against the benefits. Normally the adverse effects will abate if you discontinue the med or change the dose. Most of my side effects from HU went away after I stopped the med, though the leukoplakia (damage to lining of tongue - note white coating that looks a bit like thrush) is still present after 3 months off HU. The only thing I found helpful with the ulcers was a oral gel from Periosciences called AO Provantage. My dentist recommended it and it did help. Hope you get answers and solutions soon.
