Hi - I’ve been on it a year and I don’t think I’m losing more hair than usual. I have quite a lot of hair and I always have “shed” but I don’t notice any additional loss. I think there is a tendency for hair to “thin” as we get older but I’m hoping that’s it. It was one of my biggest worries about taking HU so believe me, I watch for it!

My hair started to thin and was told it was due to the menopause prior to being diagnosed with PVR jak2 positive. I take hydroxycarbamide 1000g/day. In the past 5 years I have watched closely and it was still thinning. I have recently stopped colouring my hair and gone au natural grey and during this time my hair has thickened so much I can’t see my scalp any more. Coincidence?

Hi Wyebird, it’s worth trying. I love my new colour and have had it cut into a new style so a new me. Hubby loves it too so all good. Let me know how you get on.

I’m afraid I’m not ready to take the plunge quite yet. I’ve just had it permed and after talking f it through with my husband, I’m having it coloured on Wednesday.

It took me some time to pluck up the courage.

Yes, I feel that Hu has definitely contributed to more rapid hair loss. Ive been taking it for 11 years, since age 52, and my hairdresser confirmed how much thinner it had gotten some years ago. Now I keep it shorter so it can look more fuller.

Hair loss (alopecia) is a known side effect of HU. Annoying as heck, but not the most serious of the possible adverse effects. We all react differently to these chemotherapies, with some tolerating some drugs but not others. HU is therapeutically weak, so for it to be fully effective, the doc often has to keep you on the edge of toxicity for it to work. That said, some people tolerate it for years without significant problems. Hope it works out for you.

Yes I reckon I’ve lost about a 1/3rd. I now perm it as it was fine before now extra fine. I use plantur shampoo and tonic. I also use ‘regaine’ purely to cover the possibility of genetic hair loss.
