Statins and PV

Hi,

The ASH 2018 conference is underway in San Diego and there are number of MPN related papers that sound very interesting but one in particular caught my eye : ash.confex.com/ash/2018/web... .

The paper is being presented today and it reports on a trial to assess the impact of statins on survival rates and risk of Thrombosis.

The conclusion is that it has a very positive impact on both.

Perhaps Statins will be added to Aspirin as part of the standard therapy for PV, at least for those >60.

Hi I'm already on statins as my haematologist was quite insistent about me starting them. So this paper sounds very encouraging!

Hi, Indeed you are fortunate to be on Statins. I’ve been trying to talk my Heam into prescribing them for me, but my Cholesterol is not high enough.

Hopefully this papers findings will percolate down to hospital consultants so that they will be more supportive.

Hi. Statins are amazing drugs - as aspirin turns out to be. If yr haem won’t prescribe then because he thnks your chooesterol isn’t high enough, maybe this paper will change his mind. Statins were taken off the “prescription only” list in the UK 5 years or so ago, but Boots etc don’t stock them as there was no demand ( I once left my statins at home when I was on holiday in Wales - I’d rembered that statins weren’t POM any more, but hadn’t realised that they weren’t actually available).

Keep posting the research papers - its a great service!

I would look at this very carefully as statins have some very serious side effects. More and more studies are indicating no CVD risk improvement re taking them, esp for women. Plus the whole ‘high cholesterol = CVD risk’ theory is now being called into question.

A lot of drugs can have serious side effects but not everyone gets them!!

Perhaps a meta analysis of research data will be done to determine where we are with statin advice.

After many years of taking statins my liver enzymes became very high. They have since come down since I stopped the statins and take plant sterol supplements instead.
