Fingers sore...PV or arthritis?

Both of my middle fingers at the first joint are starting to turn out. It is painful, red, and getting worse. This started shortly after being diagnose 18 months ago with PV. My hematologist states this has nothing to do with PV though I think it does as I didn't have this before being diagnosed. My primary doctor did blood work and x-rays which she said didn't show any cancer and ruled out some forms of arthritis. Does anyone else have this that could shed some light?

I have PV arthritis and some more odd things going on, hot sore bones, etc it was suggested it could be leaning towards Gout. look it up, it might help. Gout is not only for people who quaff port, because Gout forms crystals in the joints , who knows, it is all a mystery and I dont think the doc's really know either, I have just had a CT Scan on my toes to see if this is happening. Check it out and good luck.

Last week my foot started swelling and when I went to see my hematologist she felt it and just made the comment that is was warm to the touch. She then asked me if I had Lupus which I told her not to my knowledge. I kind of wondered if my fingers and the the foot thing could possible be gout I just don't know much about it. Thanks for your information.

Get it checked out. I am in a similar position. Doubt it has anything to do with PV. More likely some kind of arthritis. And the sooner you get a diagnosis the sooner you can get some targetted treatment. Which hopefully will address your symptoms and potentially retard the progression of the condition. Good luck!

My primary care doctor did blood work for arthritis which was negative except for maybe osteoarthritis. She also did x-rays of my hands which she said was negative for cancer and then left it at that. My hematologist hasn't done anything. I was going to request a referral to a Rheumatologist.

Sounds very similar to my experience. Recently got referred to a rheumatologist who suspects oesteoarthritis. Ordered repeat bloods and an MRI. Will see what that shows up. Maybe worth getting referred.

Hi Alex, find this quite extraordinary, as have both middle fingers at top joint affected...one on left is painful and swollen and looks like blisters on it, only happened in past few weeks; the other is really painful most of the time and suffered from that for years. Ages ago, saw a rheumatologist who said he thought it could be a form of arthritis, 'CRPS', i.e. Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome, but the one on left is a new development. I have ET by the way. All very strange. In a way, though, reassuring to hear of others similarly afflicted, as otherwise it all seems too odd. Best wishes to you. Tinkerbell

I don't have the blisters or even swelling. All I just have is the middle finger 1st joint starting to protrude out making the top of the finger shift. It is painful and sometimes red. I guess I am also a little afraid of how far this can go or if it well stop. I don't like the way it looks and I don't want to lose the use of my finger/s.

Hi Alex,

In the early years of my PV I had joint pain, often in my ankles, but a couple of my fingers look twisted at the first knuckle. Yes, red and sore at first. I was told it was gout. I believe it was related to the PV. I found upping my water drinking eventually helped.

I do have pain in my left foot at times along with slight swelling. Last week my foot really started swelling. It was extremely painful. I finally stayed off of it for awhile and it got better. The hands is totally different. I kind of thought it might be gout I just don' t know much about it. I well try drinking more water. Thanks for that information.

Hi!

I am having the same issues. My hematologist is sending me for arthritis type. Rays..whatever that is. In the meantime..the pain is worse at night..but goes away in the morning. I feel that it is caused by PV and the hydra/jakafi. It triggers the arthritis. In meantime..I do take Tylenol arthritis and use the roll on as per Rene, which helps a lot...

Keep up good spirits..this will get better..at least that is what I say in my world.

Happy Holidays!

I was told to take Tylenol as well. I am not on any medications only taking the baby aspirin. But I will try the roll on you suggested. Thank you!

I did the low carb healthy fat diet for four months and my middle finger joint pain and stiffness got a lot better, and the awful fatigue improved and the heartburn stopped completely.

I have lapsed back to eating cakes and now wake up with a headache and the wretched middle fingers with ache and don’t want to straighten.

For me, I think it is related to sugar.

Back on the LSHF way of eating, lots of green vegetables instead of Danish pastries and scones. Sigh!

I can't agree with you more. I really feel its related to the way I eat. Thanks for your input!
