Hey catwoman,

Just wanted to say that I have been on Hydrea now everyday for nearly two months and yes my wee smells strong, but only at certain points in the day, I have assumed it is some of the ingredients in Hydrea leaving my body, but thought I must get it checked out with my GP in case it is a sign of a simple urinary tract infection? Maybe others here who have more experience may know more..... I love lemons! Have been eating them like oranges since I was a kid so who knows?.... wish you well catwoman.

Mine sometimes smells strange, but I think it depends on what you've had to eat/drink. You could take a sample (easier said than done 😱) to the doctors for testing to make sure you haven't got an infection.

Specially first thing in the morning ,,it's really to be expected ,our kidneys work overtime now we have internal problems ! Eat celery a natural diaretic put it in cooking also garlic the old standby internal antiseptic ,and drink as much filtered water to wash away the toxins ...fresh fruit and green growing leaves ,,help keep you feeling good ..less bloated ! All my best to you. Twinkly. Xxxxx💜

Thanks very much Twinkly for all your good advice , Trouble with me is my nose picks up any smells , drives my husband nuts! im allergic to gloss paint ,varnish etc so we have to use all low odour for DIY in doors, he will eat garlic raw and i can smell him when he walks in the house haha hence me getting paranoid on me smelling . my elderly Aunt now tells me lemon in water bad because its acid .. all the best to you hope your doing well regards Holly x

Hi Holly,

Lemon is acid but it turns to alkaline in the body. Highly recommended on all the alkaline diet books so don't stop drinking it.

Oh the delights of pongy pee!

I have a delightful condition called interstitial cystitis connected with histamine intolerance ( completely unconnected with an MPN) and if I eat foods high in oxalates my urine smells of something smoked bacon and rancid fish! Yuck. TMI?!

Hope that makes you feel better!

As said previously only really first thing in the morning and I make sure I drink copious amounts of water during the day, I also swig a glass full during the night.....

Give it time, it will probably get better, just drink lots.

Honestly Holly the gp's know nothing.

I suffered ghastly symptoms for four years - from diarrhoea and nausea to insomnia and depression, to nerve pain and vile headaches. GP's hadn't got a clue. Was chatting to a fellow MPN sufferer who suggested it might be histamine intolerance . Bingo. Special diet. Symptoms disappeared.

Then was diagnosed with interstitial cystitis. Going to the loo up to 20 times a day and 5 times a night ( some people have to go 65 times a day) GP told me there was nothing to be done apart from anti depressants, useless twit.

Contacted a brilliant girl called the low histamine chef and straight away she said cut out all foods containing oxalates, which I did. Bingo again. Back to normal apart from occasionally smelly pee which I can live with.

I firmly believe we are what we eat......

I have been on HU now since March and definitely get this problem. But if that were the only problem I could live with it!

I also wonder why, although I am drinking far more fluids especially bottled water, that I feel thirsty all the time, especially overnight. I get through a full glass during the night. Is this unusual? At least the requirement for more fluids and more exercise is being met, as I seem to be running to the loo quite often!

Hi Stephen,

I don't often feel thirsty during the night but always get through half a litre of water. Strangely enough only go to the loo once. It's good for you, keeps the body and blood hydrated and the kidneys flushed out. Don't worry about it.

You could always buy an industrial supply of tenna lady knickers.

I believe the overnight version is particularly attractive.......

Hi Holly, now you mentioned it, I too have smelly wee and an other day I was thinking about it. I have stopped taking Hu for two years now and it is still smelly wee even though I drink lots of water and definitely no any infections etc......

Wishing you well

I also suffer with interstitial cystitis and have treatment every month for the pain it causes. I have an instill to re-line my bladder and it works for me.. also have strong smelling urine in the morning's wasn't sure if it was the bladder issue or the meds.

Hi in my case i would say its the meds i havent had this issue before i started HU , i will mention it to my heam when i see him on 19th ,
