Vydura / Rimegepant for migraine

Hi, here’s where I’ve got to with Vydura. I had a private prescription for 16 Vydura pm from a neurologist, which was working wonderfully, but the NHS for SE England will not prescribe it. The NHS headache clinic has advised my GP that they can prescribe 8 wafers per month for acute treatment of migraine, so I’m getting the other 8 privately from Dr Fox online.

I don’t like it much but it’s better than nothing and a long way better than having 14 migraines per month. I’ve also given up cheese and all alcohol, since even small amounts were triggering migraines.

Hopefully, the NHS will reach a point where it will prescribe this medication, preventatively, one day.

I have a prescription for 2 wafers as and when I need them. But recently I have found them difficult to get hold of from pharmacies. GP said there is no shortage of the meds. Switched to boots online and they seem to have no issues.

It’s a shame as they seem to work really well. I am still on preventatives as well but due to go onto Rimegepant as sole medication in March. Hopefully any issues will be resolved by then.

I was a huge consumer of cooked onions, mixed nuts and avocados. LOVED them, but learned that they are possible migraine triggers. I cut them back and reduced a couple of migraines a month (but was sad having to leave them behind). Thought I would substitute garlic. Roasted a couple of clove with olive oil. Smeared the resulting paste on toast and had one of the worst migraines ever (having had them for 25 years). Research ALSO showed garlic as a troublemaker. Sigh.....

According to grok, these are some of the commonalities.

Tyramine: This compound is found in various foods and can increase with aging or processing. Both mixed nuts and ripe avocados have been noted for containing tyramine. Cooked onions and roasted garlic, although less studied for their tyramine content specifically, are part of the Allium family, which contains compounds like sulfites that might contribute to migraines in sensitive individuals.

Other Compounds: Garlic and onions contain alliaceous compounds that have been linked to headache disorders. For instance, research indicates that these compounds might trigger migraines, nausea, fatigue, and palpitations in some individuals.

Individual Sensitivity: The response to these foods can be highly individualized. Not everyone will react the same way; some might find these foods to be consistent triggers, while others might not have any issues. The exact mechanisms by which these foods trigger migraines can also vary, involving factors like changes in vasomotor stability, trigeminal-induced neurogenic inflammation, or allergic responses.
