you can not claim DLA for Depression. iv tried and was told it stop in 2013 those who are on DLA for Depression before 2013 will get it until the 6 May 2018 then they will get a letter off the DWP tell them they must make a new claim for PIP. am on ESA now iv tried to make a claim for PIP and my points was 0 I didn't need anyone to help me to walk. or cook for me. I was not class as disabled and am 63yro now and live on my owe. those of you who are getting DLA are in for a shock in 2018. I know its all wrong ....But theirs a lot of people out their who are claiming DLA for Depression...rather than look for work ...and it bugger it up for people who need it...iv worked all my life and can only claim my pension when am 65 and 7 months.

Indeed. PIP is for people who have severe illnesses and cannot do normal things. Many mental illnesses qualify a person for PIP but depression alone is probably not enough. I was originally diagnosed with psychotic depression and got many points because when I am bad I am unable to eat, sleep, speak, go outside or look after myself or my home properly. That diagnosis changed to BPD, then SZA then back to BPD again (point being the severity of the situation [psychosis] on top of [depression] in each case). The other important factor is that you must have somebody like a psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse who can provide evidence on your behalf. I'm not sure a GP alone is enough because a GP cannot diagnose severe mental illnesses. Depression is awful, no opposing that but have you ever been hospitalized? Do you have a CPN? Do you have consistently bad experiences more often than good ones? Do you take antipsychotics to help with your clinical depression? Do you struggle to remember to take your medicine?

Unfortunately depression alone is probably not considered a crippling illness because there are many powerful medicines out there which can effectively manage depression; many of which a GP can prescribe. PIP is designed for people who literally cannot do normal things regardless of medicine and personally I think that is a very good thing. Previously anyone could say 'I am depressed' and get off sick but now you need evidence to prove it. I wish you all the best.
