I was 39 when I contracted VM and came within 10 minutes of having my relatives called in to say goodbye followed by a further emergency admission when I was, as my neurologist called it' checking out of hotel life'. The reason I contracted VM was because I was working ridiculous hours, driving too many miles in a week and trying to cope with working in a recession with a young family. In fact, I had woken up that week in a hotel and couldn't remember where I was. When I asked the receptionist where I was, she said, very helpfully, 'in reception'.
Maybe it's because when we are in our thirties we are in the 'establishing' phase of our lives where a combination of a young family and the need to establish a firm foundation for our lives is ever present? My immune system was on the floor apparently and it was only my aerobic fitness which saved me, had I not been training for a triathlon it would have been game over, that was something else my neurologist said.
It is interesting, I had wondered the same thing. I thought I was a young, healthy person. The only (sort of unsatisfying) answer I came to is that I was really stressed at the time I got sick. Maybe we are just getting run down.
