Musculoskeletal tight as a drum

I contracted viral meningitis from shingles. I was a very healthy 69 year old. I ski over 100 days a year, ride a road bike all summer, golf, hike, etc and aside from normal aches and pains for my age I would say I was very healthy.

I was hospitalized for almost 3 months. I had severe balance problems (ataxia) and had to learn how to walk again. I am 10 months into recovery and walking but it is very guarded and slow.

My question is:

Why am I so sore across the middle of my chest? I feel like the muscles are a wet twisted washcloth! I am told that is neuromuscular and it will eventually subside.

Has anyone else had these symptoms and does it go away? Is there something I am overlooking with treatments? I take Tylenol and some Cbd gummies for some relief but it is only marginally effective. The neurologist says that it all takes time and I should recover.

Would appreciate any comments regarding this condition.

I am 29 and practice yoga regularly for 12 years now, I also work out and have lots of energy..until i got meningitis. I now have balance problems as well and have to take days off after I work out. Tje muscle tightness in my torso has begun to subside but my legs still feel constantly like they are sore from the day after a rigorous workout. I feel like I've plateaued in my recovery and recouping. Its been 3 and a half months for me. I am slowly regaining feeling in my body and I even had urinary retention that forced me to have an indwelling cather for 10 weeks. My bladder finally started working again so I cam actually void urine now. It just takes time and you have to really love and listen to your body. We are different now than we used to be but we are alive and must still learn to find beauty in our new life . Best of health I wish on all of us

I have definitely gone through this. For me it was a fungal infection spreading from my lungs through my body eventually getting to my brain and giving me meningitis. As it was spreading from my lungs the tightness in my whole torso also tightened as you described. No amount of stretching helped. It did subside after a week for me. But only to turn into meningitis.....For you it may be different but my point is it should pass. Your body is just reacting and slowly recovering. I wish you the best!
