All other areas of development, maths, reading etc are fairly normal, but we are at the end of our tether trying to work out what to do with his speech. He is 4 now, and whilst people that know him can converse, strangers are often baffled. Its like he is lazy with sounds and word endings (dropping the T's etc at the end of words) but between the school and ourselves we dontj know what next to do. Any ideas or help appreciated. Thanks
My son had Bacterial Meningitis from birth,... - Meningitis Now
My son had Bacterial Meningitis from birth, spending 3 weeks in Intensive care. Thankfully full recovery, however he has speech problems....
I have a 5 year old with speech problems which sound similar to your sons, leaving of the ending of words and has trouble blending her sounds together as well. She's been having speech therapy since she started nursery and we're now waiting for an appt at a speech hosp as they think she has verbal dyspraxia. Have you spoken to HV about getting him some speech therapy?
Hi Salp, He has been having some speech therapy for a year or so now, in addition to extra resource at his school (he is in reception currently). How did you get the speech hospital appointment, via your health visitor (i guess thats what HV stands for...)? His teacher mentioned refering hoim through the school programme, but as he is around the average for other skills then she believes that they will just give him more sounds to practice with, which we already do daily. I think i am hoping for some sort of magic wand, but slowly realisingthere may not be one.
The speech therapist has referred her to Nuffield. Know what you mean about magic wand, I still hope she'll just wake up one day speaking clearly even though I was told at the beginning it would be a long, slow process. She knows everything in her head but just can't get it out her mouth. Her school are fab as well which helps massively.
