Moving from London with PLMD daughter

Hello,

We're exploring areas with good support and services for our 17-year-old daughter, who has cerebral palsy, is visually impaired, and uses a wheelchair full-time. We currently live in London but have found that accessing quality services often involves constant advocacy and follow-ups, which can be exhausting.

If anyone can recommend a good area with comprehensive services and resources for adults with complex physical and learning disabilities, we’d be very grateful. We’re also looking for recommendations on colleges with programs that could support her unique needs and help her thrive in a supportive environment.

Thank you in advance for any guidance.

Hi! I don’t have an answer to your question I’m afraid; I live in Surrey where SEND is in a complete mess and I haven’t had much to do with Adult services yet. However, I wonder if anyone would be willing to recommend their area as ‘good’ given how underfunded public services are at the moment.

If you don’t get much response, perhaps you could narrow it down to a few areas that you are considering and ask what people’s experiences of the services there are?

Very best of luck - you sound as though you are doing an amazing job, uprooting to find the best provision for your daughter

Thanks a lot for your response. I heard about Surrey and I was very surprised that services are no so good. I was expecting Surrey to be one of the best somehow. I'm sorry to hear that you have to deal with it, it's same in London. Wishing you all the best for future

I'm in north Nottinghamshire and my local CLDT are excellent. I've been with them for 15 years and haven't got a bad word to say about them. I mainly see my community nurse who gives me my antipsychotic injections, psychiatry etc. I have a social worker who is also really good as well. There is Portland College that caters for people with disabilities and its offers a good service.

Thank you very much for your reply I appreciate it. It's great to hear that you are happy with local services, it means a lot when you have to relay on them. We would need house adaptation, DP and good local hospital for our daughter. Best wishes
