Thanks I have approached MIND as well - I just wanted to see if anyone in the community knew of counsellors that were good with people with LD

it’s just come to my mind that mencap does know people who do counselling for people with a learning disability as I spoke to a gentleman last year because sadly my son was abused in his previous care home along with others and I wanted to know how you do counselling on somebody with LD and whose non verbal so definitely give them a call and good luck.

Cheryl, this is something I could talk to you about by phone. The distinction has to be made between prolonged traumatic abuse and neglect, or not. If the trauma is more of a single or known event, EMDR could work for someone with moderate difficulties, but the practitioner would need to assess capacity. For chronic or prolonged trauma, GPs can usually refer to their LD mental health team to access art or other appropriate therapy. Otherwise, private counsellors list themselves on registers like The Counselling Directory or the BACP website. You can read up biogs and call as many as you need until you find what you want.

...also. the person can self refer for NHS counselling and will be triaged into something suitable provided by different organisations. In this assessment and with gps, assumptions are made about how well someone with LDs can use talking therapies as well as the ability of counsellors to work with and understand learning disabilities. Don't be too easily put off. The Providers of counselling in those organisations will have experienced therapists and will know who they are, so you may have to push through these.

Hello Cheryl, I am a qualified trauma counsellor working in London. I'm registered with the National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society. I spent 6 years working specifically with learning difficulties (as a support worker working with traumatised adults). I'm based in Hackney and offer online or face to face sessions. I have also worked with people who have bipolar disorder. I hope they would also have good GP and psychiatrist support to check any medication is at the right levels). Here is my profile if you think it might work. You're welcome to email me if you think it might be helpful to set up a face to face or online initial conversation. All the best, Abbie counselling-directory.org.u...
