How do certain Care Homes get away with this state of affairs for so long considering all the systems in place but an unannounced visit by the Care Quality Commission catches them on the hop straight away?
The problem is that the care home would know when the inspection is, and the home has time to prepare things ahead of that inspection. I think that there should be unannounced inspections, and if the home has nothing to hide, it wouldn't be a problem. I have just seen a television programme where someone had to film their relative in a care home, to prove what a staff member was doing to them. When the manager of the home saw the footage, they said they would never have believed that staff member could do that. Unfortunately there are some bad staff members who need to get caught out, and they also ruin it for the genuine caring staff that do help and care for very vulnerable people
Agreed, any inspections like Ofsted or ISO9000 ect should always be unanounced otherwise a rose tinted view is presented with any potential trouble makers or whistle blowers being convenitenly out for the day.
I agree , inspections should not be announced to the home managers . I have too often read about the terrible treatment of very vunerable people in these places . The piece in the paper a couple of weeks ago about a downs lad beeing wipped with a wet towel by a so called carer still haunts me , he passed away a few days later .. inspections should be unanouced and more often . Managers should have thier eyes and ears open at all times . . Just my opinion but I feel so strongly about it , I also think charitable organisations for Learning disabilities should be voicing an opinion . Sorry for the rant .
