Hi there , a diagnosis may help with education support but having an autism diagnosis it is not the “ be all to end all ‘ and the spectrum is so wide that it is difficult to identify in some people. I believe you should be trying to get an education and health care plan which will help with any difficulties your son has regardless of any diagnosis. Have you approached the school SENCO for support ?

Have you spoken to the Autistic society for advice and the carers association for support for you as well and you can always ask for a second opinion as that’s your right

I know this might sound obvious but have they actually conducted an asd assessment? I have experience of needs being dismissed because they were in adequately assessed.

Like others have said the dx is not the end but rather an EHCP (your local SENDIASS can help here) is what provides support in school. If you still have difficulties and believe he has educational needs that are supported IPSEA a national charity are a good first call.

Contacting your local disabled children’s team at social services will referre the whole family for an assessment of any other care or support needs. This can range from things like access to clubs with extra support to carers at home for children with very high levels of needs. It can be useful to be “known” to social work for when your child becomes an adult and you are looking at things like support for employment or day services or independent living.

You do not need diagnosis to access services but rather to clearly demonstrate needs.

Keep going, there is support and it can be accessed!

Could I also suggest that you seek help from "The Patients Association" . I have been a member of the Assn. for some years. Over the past few years they have been able to offer to get involved with cases and not just giving information. If you do try to obtain their help and find that they are not able to help or not willing to help - please , please let me know when I would take up your case with Rachel Power their CEO.
